Journal Entry 2 by stubee from Bury, Lancashire United Kingdom on Tuesday, May 04, 2010
I've finished this novel now; I felt the story was a bit lacking but Humboldt and Gauss are both very interesting if not annoying characters. For me there was just something missing and I'm not sure if that was because of the translation rather than Kehlmann's writing. I'll pass this on to KT-J to read now and then we can get this travelling. Next: Edith Wharton - Ethan Frome

Journal Entry 3 by KT-J from Bury, Lancashire United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 05, 2010
Received, thanks Stubee! I'll get onto this once I've finished my current read. Edit 21/6/2010: I read this while I was travelling with work the other week. I found it a strange book. There was lots of details in some places and then the book seemed to skip over huge sections of time and left gaps in the stories of the two main characters. Whilst I found it interesting with the juxtaposition of the two men i.e. Humboldt going out and discovering the world by travelling round it, and Gauss making discoveries about the world without going anywhere, but I agree with Stubee that there just seemed to be something missing from the book to really engage me. I've PMd Caroley who is next on the list so will send this on when I've received their address.

Journal Entry 5 by Caroley at Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Sunday, July 11, 2010
I found this quite interesting but not as gripping as some of the books that I've been reading lately. I did enjoy it though. It was quite fascintating in places. Thanks for acquiring a replacement copy for the book Stubbee. It was definitely worth reading. I've already PMd rapturina for an address, and received a reply so hope to get the book moving again shortly.

Journal Entry 8 by rapturina at Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Sunday, July 25, 2010
I just finished reading this and quite enjoyed it's subtle and low key sense of humour. It wasn't particularly interesting as a scientific story (which is what I was expecting from the book) as there is no explanation of the science involved, but as a portrait of these two men I found it quite entertaining. I will contact PepeLePew for her address and send it on this week. ETA: Book will be in the mail on 30/7!

Journal Entry 10 by PepeLePew at Sarajevo, Sarajevo Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday, August 18, 2010
Definitely one of the best books I've read recently. Such a cool story and such a good way of writing :) I understand why people feel like there is something missing from the book, but I actually liked that approach and I think that if there were more details and things mentioned, it wouldn't be so good. Thank you so much stubee for this bookray :) Since I'm the last person in this ray, I'll put this book on my available shelf for now, but I would love to see it moving on and will send it on another journey very soon :)

Journal Entry 12 by wandering-B at Tai Po, New Territories Hong Kong on Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Very sorry to notice that I did not journal this one when received. But received and read it is. Interesting story - it was a little slow in places and a bit perplexing when it seemed to skip quite a lot of time, but quite interesting for the most part. Am PMing for the next address and will post it out as soon as I recieve it. Thanks again to all for sharing.

Journal Entry 14 by dolphin-au at Lake Macquarie, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, May 15, 2011
I'm sure a did a journal entry for this book the other day, but it is not on the site anymore! I guess Bookcrossing.com can have a stuff up now and then. I read this a while ago and forgot to write a journal entry then. I quite enjoyed the book. It reminded me of the writing of Roger McDonald, especially his novel mr Darwin's shooter. I had not realised it was originally written in German when I signed up for this bookring. Normally I wouldn't read German books intranslation, but I must say the translation didn't bother me too much,so it must have been ok. I think this book painted the Zeitgeist quite well, both main characters felt true. I think this was a fascinating time in history, when so many discoveries were made. I'm glad to have read this book.
