Summer reading!

I both enjoyed this book and hated it.
It is set in Turkey, 1999, just at the time of the big earthquake.

Sinan's world shatters. He loses his home & nearly his son. Sinan, his wife and two children live at a refugee camp, the camp is organized by a Christian organization from the US - and this is where the problems start. Sinan and his wife both have a traditional view of way of life. (Circumsision, a woman's place, who is the most important child, which parts of the body should be covered up).

To add to the problems Sinan's daugther, Irem, falls in love with an American boy.

A good read, but I hate the problems that religion creates. Fundamentalists can be found in every religion.

I started this one after a lot of delays :)
The story is just the kind that gets me! I like it very much! Thank you for sharing it!

The storyteller has a force, reading this book makes me feel I read the character's mind! :) Very well written!

They think the war is over in 'Kurdistan' . The destiny of many people is sadly not fair. Teenagers however do not base their feelings on politics :) I love the girl's names Irem and Nilufer.
I learned one more thing or was reminded of it: the power of education is the biggest.
I suffered for the girl; teenagers are confused, they need us to rely on.
All in all a good book.

Thank you Haugtussawing for the opportunity!

Well it took me a while to get round to this book but I am so glad I fished it out of my shelf last week. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found it a very interesting read. I am curious about other religions and this book helped me find out quite a bit I didn't already know. I could empathise with Irem but... well, I don't want to say too much in case I spoil the story for you.
