Cuando Marguerite Duras conoció la muerte real del protagonista de su novela autobiográfica "El amante", decidió reescribirla. El resultado es este libro. Trata la relación entre una adolescente francesa residente en Saigón en los años veinte y un joven de Indochina.

Fuerte carga erótica y lenguaje cinematográfico. Marguerite Duras escribe pensando en que su historia sea llevada al cine.
