This book has not been rated.

Will is thirty-six but acts like a teenager. He reads the right magazines, goes to the right clubs and knows which trainers to wear. He's also discovered a great way to score with women -at single parent's groups, full of available mothers, all waiting for Mr. Nice. That's where he meets Marcus, the oldest twelve-year-old in the world. marcus is a bit strange: he listens to mozart, looks after his Mum and he's never even owned a pair of trainers. perhaps if Will can teach marcus how to be a kid, Marcus can help Will grow up...

Plan to be sent of for a bookray.

I'm getting ready to send the book off to LarkOnapost.

I enjoyed the weaving of the story, back and forth, between Will and Marcus, two children. One never grew up, while the other has grown up too fast, worrying about his mother and not having much use for his father.
This book was a fast read. I even liked Will, though I tend to hate characters who lie. He was so shallow, and I kept thinking there would be some sort of depth to him. For most of the book, he fights valiantly to stay shallow until he finds himself caring about people more than he thought.

The picture with the journal entry is of the St. Joseph River, at a park in Niles, my town. This park is where I sometimes do some of my wild releases. I haven't had any officially caught, but there is always a lot of foot traffic through here, so someone is picking them up and enjoying them, I'm sure.
Summer is waning, but it is still beautiful and warm here, for the most part. I love all the seasons here, and will regret the passing of summer, but the fall to come is magnificent, with the changing colors of the leaves. Even winter is beautiful here in Michigan.

So lovely to come home and find a book waiting in the mailbox. I'll be reading this directly and then sending it on to Iran.

The photo is from our local paper. THe women are welcoming 2000 bicyclists to their small town.More about that below.

I read this book in one sitting yesterday. I found it enjoyable and somehow could relate to Will's character. Not the lying, just the irresponsibility. I thought this was a great novel to take on an airplane or to the beach. Since I'm stuck here for a bit, I thought it was still pretty good in my living room. I think I would like other books by this author and I plan to buy some as presents for my friends that get to travel... One day I'll get to go somewhere, too...

This weekend, Cycle Oregon came through La Grande. There were 2000 bicyclists here, and it was quite a party. I was really impressed with the Organization. Every year a 7 day trip is planned through a part of rural Oregon, bringing a beer garden, lots of business, and a great time to all the cities they visit. We had several bands play and I wished I had brought some light weight books to release. I'll try to find a picture of this event to post.

I wish extra good luck to this book as it travels next to Iran.

July 25, 2004: I just saw the film of this book and feel it was one of the best Book-film adaptations I've ever seen! Defifnitely Hugh Grant's best role. Completely exceeded my expectations.

it's here!!! got a couple of books on my tbr pile, still will try to read this, next week and send it on it's way in a week or so. thanks alot for the ray
----------
and it's finished and i must say pretty nice book with some wonderful moments :
Life was, after all, like air. Will could have no doubt about that any more. There seemed to be no way of keeping it out, or at a distance, and all he could for the moment was live it and breathe it. How people managed to draw it down into their lungs without choking was a mystery to him: it was full of bits. This was air you could almost chew.
------
ah well the picture, it's people playing a musical instrument! it is, it's a folk wind instrument from the northern part of iran (gilan province) and it's called naughaareh

I sure liked this book. I was particularly fond of Marcus and grew fonder and fonder of Will. He made something good out of his lies! Marcus is a smart boy and his theory about people and the acrobatic display is wonderful. Thank you Blue for organising this bookray, you gave me some relaxed hours. And now the book is going to Berlin!

The picture is Amsterdam, my neighbourhood, a street around the corner. I live nearby the Amstelriver, which you see on the picture.

Although I have already read books from other bookrings, this was the first I ever signed for, so I share the excitiment with *kerisa*. I watched the movie few months ago, liked it very much, and hope that the book is even better than the movie.

I have one book to finish and am picking this one.

Journal Entry 17 by bookmaniac70 from София / Sofia, Sofiya Bulgaria on Monday, December 01, 2003

This book has not been rated.

I`m already through the half of the book, and I`m enjoying it very much! It`s exactly so good for me as the movie- and I liked the movie a lot. The book is a pleasure to read, with those two very cute main characters (Marcus and Will). I like the way in which Marcus thinks about his mother. It is always helpful to be reminded how well our children know us- our moods, our disappointments, our faults, even if they pretend not to. Marcus loves dearly his mom but he cannot help seeing her unadequacity. She is so focused on her own unhappiness and moral principles that she fails to create a real relationship with her son.
I felt for Marcus everytime when he got troubles at school. It is a real hardship for a twelve y/o boy to feel so different from others.

I like Will, too. He is charming in his eternal childhood-like state and although he avoids commitments and prefers just floating around, still he has heart. I had a good laugh at his participation in SPAT group:-)).

I shall post once again when I finish it.

It was a very pleasant read, indeed. I devoured it for two days and enjoyed it very much. I like very much the ending when it is evident that Markus has outgrown his problems and develops like a normal teenager= more confident and adapted. I think he is my favorite character in the book.

I sent it today to BlackLilith. I hope she will have a good time reading it.

Thank you, Blue183!

Funny, quick-read! I laughed out loud at some parts. Wrapped and ready to send out to the next reader.

Nick Hornby is really growing on me. I thought this was a great book -- a quick and easy read, and not at all formulaic. It's one of my favorite of Hornby's novels.

Thanks again, flakes!
