Journal Entry 1 by potok-fan from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi Finland on Tuesday, April 06, 2010
I've tried one audiobook (link to come) and started this hard-copy, but I'm afraid I'm just not a David Sedaris fan. Every once in a while, a line is funny enough to tempt me to keep reading, but the bleakness in between the lines gets to me. In the end, I'm going to give it away half-read and move on to something I enjoy more. One line I laughed at: When I was young, my family moved from western New York State to Raleigh, North Carolina. Together, we northerners made relentless fun of our new neighbors and their poky, backward way of life. Our parents discouraged us from using the titles "ma'am" or "sir" when addressing a teacher or shopkeeper. Along with grits and hush puppies, the abbreviated form of you all was a dangerous step on an insidious path leading straight to the doors of the Baptist church.
