The Denniston Rose
3 journalers for this copy...
Set in a coal-mining town in New Zealand in the 1880s. It's the story of 5-year-old Rose and her mother, who arrive in Denniston in the middle of the night, during a storm.
I found it an entertaining historical novel (even though I normally don't read this genre very often). I picked it up only because it is set in New Zealand, but the story gripped me early on.

Arrived today with much thanks!!!
April 2nd. 2011:
Read the book now and really liked it. Partly because I just love New Zealand, partly because it was interesting to read about early NZ miners' lifes. (Just imagine to live for 20 years on a mountain and not getting down even once because the fear of the Incline). The story of Rose was very hard, poor child to suffer so badly through other people, including the own mother. Though I feel so sorry for the little girl I did not like her too much. I think she seemed too grown up for her small age so I forgot that she was just a very young child.

Arrived safely. Thanks so much!
I'm always interested in stories about women raising children in difficult circumstances, and this was certainly such a story. I learned about a way of life I knew nothing about, and this novel led me to look for photos and further information on Denniston.
Thanks for sharing!
