From the back cover:

'They didn't know what they were joining...
They didn't know why they were joining it...
But joining it they were.

Danny Wallace was bored. Just to see what would happen, he placed a whimsical small ad in a local London paper. It said, simply, 'Join Me'. Within a month, he was receiving letters and e-mails from intrigued strangers all over the country, eager to sign up.

Teachers, mechanics, sales reps, vicars, schoolchildren, pensioners - all pleged allegiance to his cause. None knew what his cause was.

Soon he was proclaimed Leader. Increasingly obsessed and possibly power-crazed he risked losing his sanity and his loyal girlfriend. But who could deny the attraction of a global following of devoted joinees?

A modern day Pied Piper, he travelled the world. From Inverness to Amsterdam, Swindon, Paris, Zurich, Crete and Oslo. He became a minor celebrity in Belgium. He had a brush with a criminal mastermind in Devon. He made hundreds of old men all over the world very happy.

A book about dreams, ambition and the responsibility that comes with power, JOIN ME is the true story of a man who created a cult by accident and is proof that whilst some men were born to lead, others really haven't got a clue...'

Utterly brilliant, and very much in the same vein as my beloved 'Round Ireland With A Fridge'...the sublimely ridiculous story of the lengths one man will go to to prove a point.

Very, very funny, brilliantly written, extremely engaging...my mum picked me up a copy of this for my birthday in July, and as I unwrapped it, bet me a tenner that before I finished it I'd have joined up...

Join Me

A prime candidate for a bookray/ring if ever there was one!

As an afterthought, I'll be adding a passport photo to the book and having a go at uploading one into my journal entry...would be very cool if any ray players who decide to join Danny's collective add their photo to the travelling book, too...when/if the book ever returns to me, I'll send it off to Mr. Wallace, who I'm sure would love it. :O)

Current reader is in the pink:

Kernow8 - UK

Then back to me, Lucycat, and off on another adventure...

Here's how to play:

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3 (erm, 4!)

1. When you receive the book, make a journal entry so we can all see that it has landed safely.

2. PM the next person in line for their address. If you haven't had a reply from them after a week, move on to the next name down (and drop me a line to let me know what's happened.) We can always loop back for anyone who misses out due to holidays, etc, but I'd like to keep the book travelling reasonably quickly if at all possible.

3. Read (and hopefully enjoy) the book, and make a journal entry to tell us what you thought...and maybe add a passport pic if you're planning on joining Danny.

***Please do show consideration for the bookcrossers patiently waiting to read this book after you. Wherever possible, I'd ask that you endeavour to get it back on the road again within a couple of weeks of receiving it. If this is going to be a problem, (say you're up to your armpits in Ring/Ray books already and it's your turn next), please drop me a line and we'll sort something out.***

4. Make release notes/a journal entry to say when the book is leaving your hands and who'll be catching it next, and pop it into the post!

That's all folks!

Bloody wonderful. Caused major nasal beer fountains when reading this in the pub. (I promise none went on the book...) Despite not being able to get a non-horrific passport photo, I'm joining. Are you?

On its way to you, swisstoni.

"join me" has landed in Nottingham. repeat. has landed in Nottingham. I will read it immediately and will then send it on it's way to another Nottingham dweller, Rachels_ratty.

No one mentioned the passport photo thing. Sigh. I'll see what I can do.

Thanks Esther! (2 books on my doormat from you in one day - you are a star)

The Observer review of this called it a "pointless book by a pointless man". Apparently Danny was so chuffed with that, he wanted to use it on the cover of the book, but the publishers wouldn't let him. Shame. This is a marvellously entertaining book. So much so that I seem to have read it in practically one sitting. It's not art, but it is very funny.

It's similar in tone and style to "I'm Dave Gorman" (which now I think of it, isn't really that surprising as it was co-written by Danny with his ex-flatmate Dave Gorman.) I read that during the course of a tedious Xmas as I recall. Anyway... I think this is a better book though, cos the scope is just so much more ridiculous. Setting up your own collective? being nice to old men? The Raymond Price fund for keeping Raymond Price out of trouble? dear oh dear.

It's Hanne I feel sorry for.

One thing though - what's happening to all the cash this must be raising? Is it going to good causes, or is it going into the Leader's pockets? Just a thought.

This is really very good, but I'm back to higher forms of reading now. Come on then Mr. Pratchett, where were we....?

Over to you Rach...

(oh and I have no idea what I was thinking when I put on my best John Motson coat for the photo I popped in the book.... trust me, this is the least psychotic picture of the 4, and I still think I look a little bit mental. That's polyester hair in the photo above btw - I know it looks real)

10 out of 10

Having vaguely heard of 'Join Me' I was interested in reading this to see what the inspiration was behind an ordinary bloke accidentally starting his own cult! I mean it's not the sort of thing that generally occurs in everyday life...

I found it an unbelievably simple read (you were so right Tim). I'm not impuning Danny's writing style, it's just a very easy book to get into and pretty hard to put down too!

After reading one of Tony Hawks books and discovering that most of his 'trials' come about as the result of drunken bets, it was a change to find out that Danny was motivated when completely sober.

He's certainly taken the quest to gather 'Karma Army' members very seriously. It's his long suffering girlfriend I had sympathy for...

Sooooooooo on the book moves to Alison (chelseagirl). Please excuse my terrible passport photo. Thought I'd share it with the world. Why not! It's already giving bus drivers the length and breadth of Nottinghamshire nightmares lol

This book is so funny ... I found myself chuckling to myself on trains and in cafes and in front of the kids, and boring them rigid by reading out great chunks of it! Funniest bit has to be the part with the limousine ...

I was trying to get a passport photo but the only machine in town has been broken for a week, so I've cut a passport-size segment out of a family snap, not quite the same but in the interests of letting the book get on its way it will have to do!

Just received - Chelsea sent to wrong book crosser lmao . Hope you don't mind the detour- will read very very quick then send on.

Gotta find a sad passport photo to put inside now !!

Just finished Terry Pratchett Night Watch so will read now !

Wow - excellent read - family are feeling a bit ignored - kids think all I can say is 'later', 'in a minute', 'GO AWAY I AM READING'.

I must say I identify with Danny. I play yahoo games - and I am a member of my own cult - the monkeys (www.monkeyroyale.com - refferal 121917 - shameless plug) and I am currently trying to get a yahoo group together of other uk monkeys so we can meet up and play dominoes and cards, and network and have fun. I can so fully identify with the keep checking the e-mails - being totally obsessed - being upset when someone leaves (my joinee jade is caled ham and unsubscribed - i was so upset ) - and family and friends thinking - 'my aly - you are such a nutter' - so I really loved this book. Gonna have to join too - will put my photo in the book so we all join together when you send the book to Danny !

Ok - enough waffle - gonna go seek an envelope and send to Jalna - see - only held it up for 2 days !! lol

p.s. found a passport piccy from about 10 years ago - I was about 4 stone lighter then - hope danny doesn't mind!

The little detour this book made was no problem to me as it just gave me a bit longer to shave the top of my TBC stack - trouble is, I kept adding more to the bottom! Anyway, it has arrived safely now and I will put it right near the top of the pile and endeavour to move it on within the requested 2 weeks ... although that might stretch just a *little.*

Well I'm sorry folks, I suspect there must be something seriously lacking in me, but I just could not be bothered to finish this book, having had it on the go for a couple of days.

I'd been so keen to read this and was sure I'd be as taken with the whole concept as everyone else, but in the event I can only liken it to watching a sitcom that has just embarked on one series too many.

If I'd happened on the website in the early stages I'd probably have joined. If I'd paid good money for the book and/or didn't have over 100 on my TBR list (that's over 100 and growing) I probably would have persevered. As it is, I'll get it on its way to PsychJo within the next few days.

Arrived this morning. I'm going to get started straight away.
Coincidentally, i went to see Dave Gorman on Sunday night, so its funny that this should come to me now. I'm already familiar with Danny from their co-authored book "Are You Dave Gorman?" so excited about reading this one.
Thanks.

A very funny book. I was tempted to read parts aloud to my boyfriend (who worships Dave Gorman and Danny for their "stupid-boy projects"!) but gave in after i realised i couldn't make it sound anywhere near as funny as it was written down! So this maybe a birthday pressie for him in February.
Immediately after reading this i went out and got some passport photos done. I attached one to the book (nice touch Luc!) and sent one of to the leader! I also wrote in my letter about bookcrossing in case he hadn't heard of it, and am now thinking of ways to promote both Bookcrossing and Join Me!
I liked the way he told the story, him and Dave are so similar. They have the same style of writing - which is great to read.
I did feel like by the end i wanted to find him and hug him and say "I'll be your last member, you can stop now!". But he's still at it, however many months later, and the websites going strong. So remember...

If you're a woman,
or a manny,
or a granny,
or a tranny,
Join Danny!

I love the idea of the Karma Army and this cult of Join Me fits in very nicely with BookCrossing's aims and ideas. I thought the book itself a little long winded but amusing for the most part.

I have added my mugshot to the lovely collection of faces at the front of the book. Since I have imagined people as look a little like there BookCrossing tags I was in for a shock [LucyCat doesn't look like a female thundercat or SwissToni like the character out of The Fast Show, and Psych[o]jo doesn't look completely mad].

"Join Me" arrived yesterday and I started reading it straightaway. It was a very quick read and frequently made me giggle. It seems that starting a 'cult' can have its down side at times; Danny (aka The Leader) is constantly having to convince the people he meets that Join Me is a collective not a cult and I spent most of the book wondering what would happen when his girlfriend found out what he was up to.

When I stopped for lunch at a cafe today, intending to carry on reading it while I ate, guess what was on their specials board. The Karma Army's favourite - Chicken Dansak! Do you think it's a sign?

I'll pass it on to hey-miki ASAP.

This was a very entertaining read. Danny is clearly a wee bit mad, but aren't we all? I think I'll be joining up!
I congratulate Danny on his achievement of all those joinees doing good deeds. I hope his relationship skills have improved a bit though! (You just can't blame Hanne, can you?)

BTW, I think we need a name for this emerging genre (Join Me, Round Ireland with a fridge, Are you Dave Gorman). Ideas anyone?

This book will now be leaving these shores and flying off to Myntti in Finland

This was an entertaining and chuckle-inducing book, although I have to agree with talkland - it was a bit long-winded.
There seem to be a lot of similarities between joinees and bookcrossers. Both are just as enthusiastic about their 'cult': participating in the forums, spreading the word, making leaflets (labels) etc.
It was interesting to see how Danny's "stupid-boy project" turned into an ever-growing Karma Army. Random acts of kindness - excellent!

The book is now on its way to Stergann.
I didn't attach my passport photo, because I didn't join (not yet anyway).

It's lunch-time in here. Maybe I should go and see if the nearest Indian restaurant has Chicken Dansak on the menu...

I am overwhelmed with the responibility of being this book's first North American reader after the fabulous world travels it has experienced..I've only visited half the countries that the book has! And to think this ring originated two years ago with the esteemed and adorable Lucycat, my first Bookcrossing pen pal.
I *must* finish The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri first, it's too good to put aside, but then this book catapults to the top of Mt. TBR. Passport photo?...uh..it's been a while...will see what I can scrounge.

I didn't know what I was reading...I didn't know why I was reading it...but reading I was...and I LOVED IT!! I think it's Hanne's loss and that other than lying and prevaricating, Danny DID not only make hundreds of old men very happy, but thousands and thousands and thousands of people completely chuffed (always wanted to use that in a sentence)(and not sure I did it correctly) to do good deeds on Good Friday. I have explained the concept to my son, BCer legomeister and we will be participating on every possible Friday.
As for a passport photo, I'll have to improvise in the interest of ring timeliness, so while I PM the next recipient, I'll dig around for a little photo.
4/23/05 - good lord, it's just a photo..I kept putting off the search. But I don't have any that reflect my recent weight loss!!! Well, I'm just gonna get over myself and send the book to the next recipient, sans (not so)Extreme Makeover head shot... Have PM'd her and am awaiting her response.

This collective-of-a-book arrived in my mail last week, but I am only now journaling it's arrival. Call it a pregnancy induced brain problem, if you will!

Call it pregnancy-induced slackerness (or just education-employee slackerness --summers off--, or even general slackerness), but I do apologise for the delay. This little crafty book made it's way to the next participant in today's mail.

It was great...clever...certainly inspiring of good deeds. Very bookcrossing-esque. I love when someone just goes through with their "crazy" ideas, and inspires all of us to get off our bums and DO SOMETHING that trickles down to others. Thanks for passing this one along! :)

The length of time I kept this book is a bit embarassing. I got it in August, read it, went off to college, and found it when I came home for Winter Break...even though I thought I sent it. I apologize to everyone on this bookring. Anyway, I did enjoy this book. It's quite a neat idea, and Danny Wallace seems like an interesting guy. My friend Dave saw this book and thought it was awesome as well. The only person I felt bad for at the end was his girlfriend.
