Lindsey Owyang, the Chinese American heroine of The Dim Sum of All Things, is all grown up. She has taken a job at her Catholic grammar school in San Francisco. She's thrown into confusion when an old crush turns up while her boyfriend is away, at the same time as she's trying to satisfy her curiosity about her family's hushed-up history.
I liked Lindsey, and because I also grew up Catholic in San Francisco, I could appreciate her loving descriptions of the city and her exaggeration of Catholic school life. But the writing was uneven and sometimes her jokes fell flat. I don't regret reading it--the story was good and I found it interesting to read about a place I know well from a different cultural perspective--but I felt that the book could have used one more set of rewrites before being published.

Tsjara chose this out of the Two Worlds VBB. I sent it to her by surface mail today. I'm hoping it travels quickly--the book was just a little bit too heavy to go affordably by airmail.

It's here :) Thank you very much jumpingin and for the card and the teas too! (I thought I smelled something like mint.. and then I opened the book and saw the teas :p). This sounds like a fun read, looking forward to it :)
I meant to pick this up earlier (like so many other books waiting on mt. tbr :p) and last week or so I finally did. :)
It was an interesting read. I could really relate to Lindsey, and as she told of her feelings and experiences, they really resonated with me (also being a twenty-something Asian growing up in a western country).
At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like the book, the writing style took some getting used to and the amount of references to American pop culture was a bit overwhelming.. especially since I didn't get half of them. :p But I enjoyed it once I got into the story.
At times it is a fun, nonsensical read with a bit of romance, but at the same time it gives good insight into the life and mind of Asians (probably also other ethnic minorities?) born and grown up in America (or other western country). Not belonging in the country you grow up in, nor the country of your ethnic origin...

This book has a nice strange-ish first sentence:
Lindsey Owyang was about to learn a thing or two about Chinese people, Catholic nuns, and taxidermy.
And is now travelling to a bookcrosser in Florida who picked it out of the vbb...
Hope you like it! :)

Well, the first sentence arrived today, attached firmly to the rest of the book! Laughing, I can't wait to see how the story turns out, started by that silly sentence! Thanks for sending the book along to me, and thanks to 'Collectorkerri' for organizing the First Sentence Virtual Book Box!☺

So sorry I waited so long to journal this book. I actually finished reading it at the beginning of February, but this was an extremely busy school year for me. I loved the story and was happy with the outcome.
