Very strange book. This is a new author to me and I will try a few more of his books before I pass judgement. This books previous owner left all kinds of marginal notes, that were distracting to me. Just so you know.

Journal Entry 5 by Aquina from London , Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, January 15, 2007
I've started reading it 2 years ago and put it down. Recently I read the gentler "An artist of the floating world" by Kazuo Ishiguro, whose theme is also the malaise of the japanese society post WWII, and I've decided to give this one another go-it's always good to have several perspectives on the same subject. So far I'm loving it, probably because I know a little more about the historical background and the motivations of the main characters. I'm planning to bookray it once I've finished reading it, together with "An artist of the floating world"

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea (Japanese: 午後の曳航), a novel written by Yukio Mishima and published in 1963, chronicles the story of Ryuji, a sailor with vague notions of a special honor awaiting him at sea. He meets a woman who he falls deeply in love with, called Fusako. and ultimately decides to marry her. Fusako's 13 year old son is in a band of savage boys who reject the adult world as illusionary, hypocritical and sentimental. They train themselves in a belief they call "objectivity". Ultimately, Ryuji pays the ultimate price for intertwining with these boys.

I have to agree that this is a strange book. Very well written, but deeply disturbing in some ways. The margin notes were a bit distracting, but it was funny to see how someone else "read" the book. It'll go to next person soon.

Journal Entry 11 by Ftarazu from Ovar, Aveiro Portugal on Thursday, December 27, 2007
I'm so sorry but I have noticed that I didn’t make a JE! It arrived almost a month ago, when I was not expecting it anymore. I thought it was lost! But there it was one day! I have read it now and I have to say that this is a very weird book. That little boy and his friends are strange and mean. And I was not expecting at all the ending of the book. Until the last page I was all the time thinking ‘this is not going to happen’! I have enjoyed the notes along the text, it was nice to see how it was interpreted by others… It will be sent as soon as I have an address!
