I really enjoyed this book. I liked the format and the manner in which the passing of time was handled. I thought the writer was very skilled at filling in the gaps between the dates which feature in eachy chapter. OK, some of this was a bit contrived but overall it was a structure that worked for me. I was a little bit disappointed that the pattern was not maintained right through to the end but I can see why it wasn't. I liked the way the relationship between the two main characters was 'problematised', but I felt the end of the book was a bit of a cop out on this front although again I see why. Liked the characters and felt they came alive. The dialogue was well written and the whole thing cracks along a a good lick. I also lijke the sense of period he got - the 70s, 80s and so on - with the music, clothes and general feel of the time in question. Probably one for the laydeeze but blokes in touch with their feminine side might like it too. better than his first novel, rather more grown up. Think I will pass this to Mum to read, so reserving it.

Found the book on a visit to Cragside in Northumberland when we were on holiday there. I read it and really enjoyed it, my husband has now read it and enjoyed it too, so about to 'release' it back home, somewhere around Somerset, not too sure where yet...Jen HB
