Welcome to Bon Temps. It's just your average sleepy backwater town. You know the kind of place... a dime store, a trailer park, a diner, and a gang of newly "out of coffin" undead.
Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in smalltown Luisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. she is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability" -she can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. But then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome -and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life.
But Bill has a problem of his own: he's a vampire. With a bad reputation. He hangs with seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of -big suprise - murder. And when one of Sookie's co-workers is killed, she fears she's next....

Dead Until Dark is the first volume of The Sookie Stackhouse's adventures in The Southern Vampire Mysteries seriers.

I got this copy from my friend, and she was kind enough to let me register it and pass it on to other True Blood influenced vampire addicts, thank you Saara!

Liked the book, but liked the TV series even better. In the book the prejudiced worldview is much stronger, and the narrowmindness disturbed me alot. Will read the whole bunch of books though, need my daily dose of Sookie :)

I'm really sorry for keeping this book for so long, there's no excuse. I'll send it out as soon as I have Appelsiini's address.

I've seen a bit of this book's episodes on TV so I knew a bit of the story already. I enjoyed reading it all the same and I really liked Sookie and Bill.

I didn't like this book that much, which is odd because a lot of people's whose taste I appreciate like it a lot. The romance didn't gather my attention, Bill and Sookie got together too fast and too simply for my tastes, and I didn't have any sense that mentally they were right for each other (apart from the not-being-able-to-read-minds). I also didn't like Bill's violent approach to Sookie's personal problems. I was expecting her to drop-kick him out the door.

Finally the civil rights analogy in the book bothered me. The vampires are really dangerous, and with the exception of Bill, they all came across as rather nasty, while with all the real-world civil rights movements involve groups who have the normal mix of good and bad, nice and nasty as the most socially-privileged group in society you can imagine. Also, the vampires are so much more dangerous than normal human beings that I didn't see how humanity had survived against them (for breeding purposes, perhaps this is explored in later books?)

Next step to pass it along to Amynita.

I did enjoy reading this one. I have seen the TV series, so I knew the story. To my surprise, the tv series is a lot like the book, I'd heard that they are very different. Although I was always looking forward to the evenings and reading the book and entering the world of Sookie and Bon Temps, I did realise at some point that I found the relationship between Sookie and Bill sometimes a bit annoying. They got together very fast and there was immense trust and love between them right from the beginning. Having watched three seasons of the TV-series I know some of Bill's reasons (not yet revealed in this book) and I did sort of understand Sookies reasons too, although not completely for such deep feelings so fast. There was a lot of "we shouldn't be together, but I can't be without you", which to my taste almost got to a point of too much repetition, but luckily the story went forward from that. And all that pondering after such a short relationship. Why Bill and not Sam?
But in general, I did enjoy the book, it was exciting and romantic. Looking forward to the next volumes!

The book is on its way to audotja!

I had seen TV series and heard two opposite reviews about Sookie Stackhouse -books. So I didn't know what to expect, whether story was going to be romantic and erotic novel with blond naive bimbo's view or strong and independent feminist struggling against the society. Well, I think it is more like first one. Maybe that's why I liked so much book and loved Sookie. Story wasn't too deep and people seemed normal, not overly good and clever. I was amazed how much book and TV series were alike. Maybe if I had read the books first, my opinion about likeness would differ.

Sorry for the Christmas delay. Going to send the book to Viikka soon. Thanks for this ring!

I have seen 3 season's of the tv series and that probably was the reason why I was kind of disappointed in the book. The tv series (at least season 1) was astonishingly true to the book so reading the book actually didn't give a lot of new insight to Sookie and Bill's characters. It was an easy read but I'm not sure if I bother to read books 2 - 6 before reading vol. 7 which is waiting in my Mount TBR :-)
