Kept my interest most of the time but would have preferred it to be 200 pages shorter. I was a bit confused at first with the changes in narrator and time but I feel it added more depth to the characters, helped me understand them a bit more.

Planning on adding this to soffitta1's 1001-library UK VBB list of books.

Wow, I really enjoyed this one. It is also probably one of the few books I have read, where the author uses multiple time shifts with such relative ease. I think it was the absolute skill of the writing that allowed this to work so well. Simply put it reflects on growing up in Scotland as part of an intriguing an unusual family. What remains with me most is the dark humour and the scattered but poetic interludes reflecting on nature and the local landscape. As opening lines go this one really sets the tone 'It was the day my grandmother exploded. I sat in the crematorium, listening to my Uncle Hamish quietly snoring in harmony to Bach's Mass in B Minor, and I reflected that it always seemed to be death that drew me back to Gallanach.' For me, this was totally absorbing.
