7 out of 10

This book has different cover art than shown here.

It was fun to revert to reading children's literature for a bit. I was startled, though, by quite how overt some of the sexist (and even racist) assumptions are.

"whilst the boys amused themselves by looking through the old toy cupboard... Diana got very busy." Yes, Diana cleaned the room all by herself. Although she wasn't smart enough to think to tie a kerchief over her hair to keep that from getting dusty - that was Roger's contribution to her work.

"Mr Lyton looked up. He expected to see a gipsy-looking boy, sly and shrewd. Instead he saw Barney, with his bright, corn-coloured hair brushed back, his honest eyes, and straight, fearless look. He held out his hand." What a relief to see that he had corn-coloured hair! ;)

I think it took too long for the adventure start in the Rockingdown Mystery. They could have taken less time for the preparations..The atmosphere though was nicely simple and also a bit escapistic.

Like Potok-fan, I also noticed how one-sided the gender roles on the book were. It bothered me too that Diana had to clean all by herself the room from the dust of several decades, while the boys just amused themselves and didn't even bother to help. Fair game..(>_<)>

I can't resist Enid Blytons, since I absolutely loved her books as a kid! I always wondered how it was possible for the children to get into such wonderful adventures all the time, as absolutely nothing happened in our village!
