Arrived today. As I just finished all my other bookrings, I'll set aside what I'm reading now and start on it tonight! Besides ... there's something especially exciting about getting this book before its actually released in the States. Thanks to karen07814 for sharing. :)

It's books like this one that make me wish I were more eloquent so I could give it a proper review. That said, I LOVED this book. Maybe it helped that the main characters are almost exactly the same age as my husband and I, but either way...the premise is simply brilliant and the story beautiful, at times laugh out loud funny, at times horribly sad. On the back cover, Jonathan Coe is quoted as saying, "You really do put the book down with the hallucinatory feeling that they've become as well known to you as your closest friends." It's hard to believe, but he's actually spot on. "Dex & Em. Em & Dex." This is definitely one I will remember.

Off to the next reader as soon as I have contact info.

Arrived in today's mail, looking forward to it. This will give me nice little breaks from bashing away at the taxes, and if I time it right, a great reward for finishing them.

To international readers: April 15 is the dreadful deadline day for USA income tax.

We hear that we only have one chance to make a good first impression, and maybe it's also true of fictional characters. The first time we meet Dexter, he's scheming about how to dump the girl he spent the night with. As far as I'm concerned, it's all downhill from there - by the end of the book he's hurt just about everyone and everything he's come in contact with. So I honestly can't see why Emma wastes any time considering him a friend.

At the beginning, he's got good looks, and Emma's certainly not the only one to be beguiled by that in school years. But after decades of Dexter's drinking, smoking, and drug use, that can't have lasted. Emma has the brains and determination to improve her life, long and painful as the job is, and also the strength and judgment to jettison a couple of losers from her romantic life. So why doesn't she seem to see the big letter 'L' stamped on Dexter's forehead?

The book was well-written and interesting; I'm glad I signed up for the bookring. But my favorite character was Dexter's co-presenter, Suki, always shouting "WAHEY!"

Journal Entry 9 by Susammelsurium at Hamburg - Barmbek, Hamburg Germany on Thursday, August 5, 2010
Picked it up today – looking very much forward to reading it! Only one book in line before, will read it soon.

Update, August 12th 2010: At first I was not sure if it's just all "When Harry met Sally" in the UK – actually, this comparison is even drawn in the book by one of the characters, Ian Whitehead. But then it wasn't and I liked it a lot. To have a span like 1988 to 2007 was particularly intriguing because by following Dex and Em I retraced some of my own steps, too... besides, I can claim to know a bit about long friendships in and out of love (it'll be 11 years by the end of 2010 –)...

One of the former readers mentioned he or she is expecting a feelgood movie to come up soon and according to IMDb the production actually has started, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. This might work... let's see what they make of it!

Arrived safely today. Thank you to Suzanne4Books for mailing it to me. I'm looking forward to reading it though I still have another book in line. I will read it soon.

I just saw that this book has already travelled a bit, which makes it even more interesting to me.

Edit 16. Sept. 2010: I will send it to Qantaqa after I read it.

Journal Entry 12 by BennyDE at on Friday, September 24, 2010
I really enjoyed reading this book. Being about (but not quite) the same age as the protagonists in the story, there were many things I can totally agree with. Astonishing how close some happenings seem to be to people who were young in the Eighties. I could find many parallels to my own and the lives of friends.

The first half of the book I thought it to be very funny, filled with a lot of humorous details. But then I found it more and more dramatic, especially concerning the fact that the two just couldn't get to each other. It made me painfully hoping the plot would somehow change and save the couple in some unexpected way right away.

Thank you very much for having me in the Ray.

Today I will send it off to Qantaqa.

I finished this book quite a while ago but forgot to make a journal entry - but seeing as I'm the last person on the ray's list, I hope that doesn't matter!

If I hadn't heard so many good things about this book, I probably would have stopped reading it after the first 50 pages or so, because neither did I like any of the characters (especially Dex!) nor the style of writing. Well, I'm glad I persevered - in the end, this was a very nice and touching book. I can't say anything else about it, because I don't want to reveal any parts of the story...

I'll try and find a worthy reader for it :)!

Arrived today. Thanks very much for this book! :)
