I casually picked up this book at the end of the convention because it said "The best book I have ever read on Africa" on the cover. I wondered what was so special about it (especially as nobody else had already snapped it up!). This sentence from the back cover clinched the deal: "In this brilliantly evocative book he focuses on Africa's rarest creatures - the expatriates who are Africa's adventurers and eccentrics, outcasts and dreamers." Being an expat myself, I'll be interested to read this and compare my experiences with those of expats in warmer climes.

Chapter 'Letters from the Old Man' about Latham Leslie Moore, the Sultan of Msimbathi, http://www.tendegreessouth.com/Thesultan.htm

“Botswana is somehow able to remain aloof – not just from the giant to the south [South Africa] but from all of Africa. For example, the Batswana not only talk about justice, freedom of speech and civil liberties, they also do something about these phantom principles. One need only check the jails to discover that there is not one political prisoner in the whole country. The government publishes the most widely read newspaper in the country, but it’s remarkably devoid of pro-government rhetoric. It is handed out free of charge to everyone in Botswana in the hope that this will make for a better-informed citizenry.”

Very interesting description of game ranching as a solution for farming, managing wild animals and providing protein to the local population. Cattle destroy the habitat and cause desertification, but farming and culling of native species could be beneficial for both landscape and yields. “ “The gazelle produced three and a half times more meat than the cattle.” According to his findings, cattle grazed by the local peoples in Kenya produced about one pund of lean meat for each acre of dry land. On modern ranches cattle might produce as much as 3.9 punds on the same amount of land. Gazelle, however, were by far the most effective meat producers: 14.6 pounds for one acre of land.”

Check Mrs Helen Suzman……………..

“These English … have stayed insulated from blacks, and the blacks feel uneasy with them. It’s all so philosophical and verbal. Not so with us Afrikaaners. You see, we’re just as much a tribe as the blacks are. We’re black in our own way. We grew up with them, we lived with them, we worked beside them. They have no illusions about us, nor we them. And in the long run, it will be us Africkaaners who’ll provide for the blacks; it’s we who’ll really make multiracialism work. . . .”

Enjoyed the story of Latham Lesley Moore, the self-styled Sultan of M’Sibati, a small island off Tanzania.
Alan Root – film maker
Richard Leakey – archaeologist discovered prehistoric hominid remains.

I wonder how much has changed since this book was written in 1983. Since then, so much has changed. South Africa no longer has apartheid, Sudan has been at war, white farmers are being attacked in Zimbabwe, the photographic safari has taken over from the hunting safari. Perhaps the change which has had the most impact is the epidemic of AIDS in Africa and the emphasis on small-scale structural lending to facilitate local development instead of charity reacting to disaster.
