This text is an exploration of the inspirational power of language. It proposes that the entire body of J.R.R. Tolkien's writing dealing with Hobbits was essentially the product of a list of associations with the word "Hobbit".

Tolkien was fascinated by words and languages (he was, after all, a linguist and philologist). This book does a pretty good job at showing how Tolkien used words in his creation of Middle Earth. A few times, I found the author's connections to be a bit tenuous (I've studied Anglo-Saxon), but other times, I found him to be spot on.

Also, this is a very cute book. A fun size and lots of wonderful drawings. My only complaint with the design is that the text was extremely small and was sometimes difficult to read.

Thank you for helping me clear off a bit of my TBR stack.

I'm sorry it took a while to send this - I was sick all last week and couldn't make it to the post office. :(
