I hate to do this to a book that has such a lovely cover... LOL! I really, really, really hated this book. It took me ages to get into it and ages to finish it. It has chick lit pretensions, but yet it also takes itself a bit too seriously. There are far too many characters - you have a hard time having sympathy for any of them. I didn't really care about *any* of the characters, least of all the insane, highly slappable main character. I kind of found myself wishing bad things on her! LOL! At any rate, don't think I will seek out any more of Ms. Davis' writing. Why, oh why do US publishers pick up crap books like this and leave fun, witty and entertaining books like Jill Mansell's to only be published in the UK? The good review from The Guardian should have been my first clue...

Journal Entry 6 by talkland from Eastbourne, East Sussex United Kingdom on Thursday, August 14, 2003
Thank you Kayters for posting this to me. It will be interesting to see how one woman copes with five lovers and five mobile phones. I have a hard time coping with one husband and a mobile that is guaranteed to either run out of credit or the battery die at the wrong moment!

Journal Entry 7 by talkland from Eastbourne, East Sussex United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 20, 2003
Ever what to shake someone and say, "Wake Up!", well that is what I want to do Kathryn Cheet. Supposedly, Kathryn is a feisty London cab driver but really, despite her outward appearance of togetherness, she is a complete mess emotionally. She is afraid to commit or direct her own life in any way. She lets events control her, rather than the other way around. Not only is she cheating on five different lovers but she is cheating herself. [Why do they put up with her?] She thinks that she is in control and that she is important to these five people but when push comes to shove, Kathy, Kit or whatever, is not really there for anyone, even herself! One can't help but pity her but she also makes you want to shake and say, "Wake up, you got no life! For **** sake you are thirty not some stupid little teenager." The catalyst to the break up of her chaotic life, is a charmer called Craig Summers who Kathryn nicknames Twinkle. Suddenly he is forcing himself in to her life and her façade of order and control collapse completely and totally. Kathryn soon finds out who matters, and what matters in her life. Soon she is faced with the prospect of losing Amy [a cute lesbian journalist], Joel [her tomboy], Johnny [a musician who she had a crush on since secondary school], Stefan [a toff and a fly-by-night operator], and Richard [single father with a lovely four year old daughter]. Incidentally, in case you are wondering, in reality I am a timid shy retiring type who won't say boo to a goose. I would never be able to shake an Amazonian figure like Kathryn much less tell her, "Buck up!"

This book was mailed to me in error as I am not a part of this ring. It is kind of tempting to read it considering the serendipitous way it came to me, but I am passing it back to the next person who is legitimately in the ring instead. Happy reading!

Journal Entry 11 by Sissyrun from Modesto, California USA on Tuesday, January 06, 2004
This came in the mail today and I started right on it. I've read two chapters so far and I like it. Will write more when I've finished reading it. 1/19/04 - Looks like Sarah/talkland summed it up niceley. What can I add? Here is someone who thinks she is soooo in control, calling the shots.... yeah, right. Life was happening all around her and she was running from and to one relationship after the other. No wonder she kept a diary/journal. Towards the end of the book you are kind of glad her world collapsed around her..... breathe Kathryn. That is freedom you smell! Be your own person and true to yourself.
