Lucy in the Afternoon: An Intimate Memoir of Lucille Ball (Large Print)

Book Description:
Diehard Lucille Ball nuts are the likely readers of this corny star biography. Brochu, an admitted I Love Lucy freak, was 14 when he saw his heroine in a Broadway play and apparently never got over it. Years later, near the end of her life, he became a daily afternoon fixture for backgammon and conversation. Readers who can stomach Brochu's constant self-aggrandizement--the book actually opens and closes with his dreams about Lucy--will come away with some interesting stories about her phenomenal rise on TV, marriage to and breakup from Desi Arnaz, and relationships with co-stars ranging from Bob Hope to Richard Burton. There's no denying that Ball was a pioneering force in TV comedy; it's too bad that this "special friend's loving tribute" is so fawning.
I bought this former library hardback book for 50 cents at a library sale in Canton, Georgia.

My Review: I hadn't actually planned to read this one, but when it came back in my bookbox, I thought I would give it a go. I love Lucy, just like most of the world. Her TV show is one of my favorites, there has never been another show like hers. She's one of those celebrities that I think it would have been fun to meet and spend a few hours with. Jim Brochu got to do that for many afternoons and told a lot of fun stories about Lucy and told some of her stories, as well.
This was a really interesting book about Lucy, it's not in-depth, but it's still hilarious.
I loved the part where she was house hunting and the realtor showed her a huge mansion and she didn't like it too much. The house across the street caught her eye. It wasn't for sale, but she went over and knocked on the door. The lady who lived there let her in and said they hadn't put the house on the market, but they were thinking of selling it. Lucy and the man who lived there negotiated a price and then she came out on the porch where the realtor was waiting for her and said "I just bought this house." She paid around $85,000, but then years later it was sold for millions. Her second husband Gary said she could put the 4 foot square dollhouse on a small plot on the street and sell it for $1 million.
