I found this paperback some months ago from the recycling shelf in the main library of Tampere. This is an Abacus paperback edition from 2007, 314 pages.

Synopsis:

"The key to contentment in the Scottish climate is the right attitude to rain - just as in life the key to happiness lies in making the best of what you have. Bruised in love by her faithless Irish husband, Isabel Dalhousie is a connoisseur of intimate moral issues. As a philosopher, she spends a great deal of her time considering the lives of those around her. There is her housekeeper Grace, whose future she must secure; her niece Cat, who is embarking on a dubious new relationship; and then there is Jamie, Cat's ex-boyfriend, a handsome young musician with whom Isabel is hopelessly falling in love.

Intensely thoughtful and consistently entertaining, The Right Attitude to Rain is shot through with compassion and unassuming intelligence."

This was my first reading experience from this writer. The Scottish environment always appeals to me. The main feeling this book left me was warmness so the story evoked some pleasurable emotions inside me. On the other hand, I found the book a bit dull at some points, philosophy is not very intriguing for me. All in all, I liked Isabel Dalhousie enough to maybe read some other books featuring her too.

Now I am sending this book forward as a wishlist surprise.

Oh, what a delightful and surprising book! I've read all the previous books on "Isabel Dalhousie"-series and it is so nice to see the story evolving - and to the very interesting direction!
Sending this to Stf next, and joining the PRKL-challenge too.

Thanks Chania. I too am as McCall Smith lover and I really like this series the best - because Isabel Dalhousie is such an intriguing character don't you think?

This is destined for my PC shelf - It's the same size as my other ones of this series (with the exception of the careful use of compliments http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/5915304/which I just sent up north in exchange) so I'm really glad to have it. (I am sure I have another copy of this somewhere - unread - but I canot find it anywhere, so doublly grateful for this. I was a bit cross to read Compliments before this (i.e. out of sequence)

I only save his books (and a few select others) so hope bookgeo isn't too disappointed that this doesn't join the PRKL challenge.

I KNEW I wouldn't be able to resist this and read it in the space of 24 hours (though I didn't really have the time, I made time - getting up at 6am this morning to finish it)

This is an excellent book. I like reading Isabel's thought process - this time on the ethics of dating. I'm off to Scotland for a short break after Easter. Not sure if I'll make Edinburgh proper (other than the station and airport) but the train goes quite close to Peebles and I'll surely enjoy seeing the hills both sides of the border :)

I am fairly sure I've read most of the book before - which means I did have it (I was sure I had!) ...or then read someones' (not BC) ... What I don't think I did was finish the book (which is very unlike me) and which is why I was so surprised when reading its sequel (the careful use of compliments)

Thanks Chania for this gift. You are really a blessing to me (and another McCall Smith fan which is always nice! I still think the Sunday Philosopher's Club series is the best!)

This now goes into my Permanent Collection with gratitude! Available for loan to reliable bookscrossers.
