I hadn't read this before, although I had a vague idea of the story. I really enjoyed it, although several of the characters made me really cross, for example, all of those people who didn't think the letter was enough of a punishment. I found it very interesting the way that Hawthorne kept comparing the beliefs and behaviour of the time the story is set to his own time. You forget that people writing a long time ago might still have been writing a historical novel. Thanks very much for sharing this FancyHorse and hopefully it will have a new reader very soon.

It took me a while to get used to the language, but it was quite beautiful in its own way. I can't believe how stupid people used to be, putting a pregnant woman in jail and keeping her and her baby locked up for months!
