This is a fascinating account of the spice trade and the race to find new routes and sources, mostly from the mid-16th to the mid-17th centuries. Who'd have thought such a topic would be so engrossing, a real page-turner? The arrogance and belligerence of the merchants and their backers seems quite incredible as viewed through 21st century sensibilities.

Despite the subtitle, How One Man's Courage Changed the Course of History, the eponymous Nathaniel only appears on p202 (of 373) and by p306 'It was the last time he was seen alive.'

Warning: Some of the torture scenes towards the end might not be for the faint-hearted. On the other hand, if you enjoy reading about that sort of thing, they're probably not graphic enough! (LOL!)

6 out of 10

Really depressing, I'm afraid. Nowhere near as good as his book about Giles Mandeville.
