Pre-numbered label used for registration.

There are only about 26 pages of text accompanying this handsome map of the Discworld, but they're choice; Pratchett's laugh-out-loud ratio continues to be quite high. It starts with his introduction/apologia:

"I said there would never be a map of the Discworld. This is it....

"After an earlier map.... was published, people asked me if this fossilization of the imagination will prevent future stories. Well, London and New York have been mapped for some time, and still seem attractive as locations for novelists. There will be more Discworld stories, I hope. The only difference is that now I'll have a map reference.

"This map possibly isn't the way things are. But it is one of the ways they could be."
Briggs provides an introduction as well - also quite amusing. From there the "book" consists of a (very) brief history of some of the Disc's great - er, famous - explorers. I can't quote very much without transcribing the whole book, but the first bit that made me guffaw was this footnote to the entry about General Sir Roderick Perdeigh, whose father was with the Royal Sto Plains Riflers:
[Riflers] So called for their habit of collecting weapons, boots, gold teeth and jewellery off the stricken enemy, and the idiotic bravery necessary to see that there were as many of the stricken as possible. So keen was the average riflingman that many would go into battle armed only with pliers and armoured shoehorn, and would often manage, in the press of battle, to get teeth and footwear from enemies who were not only alive but actively fighting back.
Not an essential addition to one's Discworld library, but a funny little luxury item...

This little package came in the mail just as I was leaving to move up to school. If I hadn't been running a bit late I would have missed it. I am making myself unpack before I get to read it :)

My complaint about this would be that there's not enough to it. It is very entertaining, like I expect from Discworld stuff, but having to fold the %&*/#$) map back up means it only gets a 7. I'm offering this in the forum for a bookray. Please PM with location and shipping preference if you'd like to join.

Bookray list
----------------------------------------
lady-sybil (Canada, international)
BlossomU (Portugal, international)
Stergann (France, Europe)
myntti (Finland, international)
caligula03 (California, US preferred)
talon2claw (Ohio, US)
magicwritinggal (AR, ??) - Asked to be skipped
ukbrat (Canada, international)
Nuela (Italy, Europe)
Leanne345 (United Kingdom, international, wants to be near end)

Mailed to lady-sybil Tuesday, September 16. You can still join, but I cannot guarantee your shipping preferences (I'll try) and you'll likely be put near the end of the list.

WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS BOOK
1) Please make a journal entry to let us know it's arrived
2) Read it and let us know what you think
3) Contact the next person on the list for their mailing address. If you don't get a response and you've tried several times and it's been over a week, skip them and go to the next person. I'll move the skipped person further down the list so they can get it later.
4) Mail it to the next person - the least expensive way is fine. Please try not to keep it more than a month or so.

Received this very enlightening geographical item yesterday in the mail - one wonders about the accuracy of something that can only be obtained from CMOT Dibbler of Treacle Mine Road in Ankh-Morpork :-) I completely agree with Terry Pratchett's take on Victorian explorers.

My husband is not done reading the 'mapp' yet (of course his reaction was: Do we HAVE to give it back? ;-) ). As soon as he is done, I will mail it to Portugal to remove the temptation :-)

mailed: 10/10/2003

The Mapp has just arrived and it seems to be so much FUN! Taking it out of the envelope I could not help myself opening it and just pouring over it ( Discworld is pretty different than how I imagined it), and spent half an hour just looking at it. Thank you daidy and lady-sybil!

I will be reading, ahem analyzing it shortly and shipping it to stergann.

Excellent map, poor me had no idea how all those bits and pieces fit together. And the acompanying texts were charming if much too short - in fact this is a regrettably fast read, I would love to read about yet more Discworld Explorerers. And I loved seeing how many places in the Discworld Pratchett still has to explore.
Book was shipped to Stergann in France a few hours; hope it does not get lost on its way :) like so many Discworld explorers

Oh no, this book is too short! I would have liked to read more about Discworld's famous explorers. In any case, this was a fun and enjoyable read, and the map was lovely to look at. I can't even imagine the amount of work that must have gone into putting it together.

I mailed the book to caligula03 today.

I think my husband would rate this atlas a 10 but he's not a bookcrossing member. His response was "A map of Discworld? AWESOME!"

I'll have to go with cute, rather than awesome. I wish there was a little more to it. I'm a map and atlas junkie and this one just doesn't follow through enough for me. It's still a must for Pratchett fans, though.

I just love Discworld, so despite having to fold the map, this one gets high ratings from me.

I do apologize for stalling this bookray so long. magicwritinggal has asked to be skipped, so I PM'd ukbrat and am waiting on an address. I'll journal again when I'm ready to mail it out.

This is a brilliantly illustrated map of Discworld. It's interesting to see where some of my favorite plots occurred. Good to see that there is still space on the map for more plots!

PS: The explorer's note accompanying the map were greatly appreciated!

OK, That's great, and not only because it helps to find out where people are during the reading of a Discworld's novel, but even for the design (the only shame was that elephant wasn't visible) and the little stories that accompanish the mapp. I'm very glad of taking it, now I give back to Nuela.
