Here is the novel that started it all, launching the cyberpunk generation, and the first novel to win the holy trinity of science fiction: the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. With Neuromancer, William Gibson introduced the world to cyberspace--and science fiction has never been the same.

Neuromancer was like a dream – not a good dream and not a nightmare. It was simply a dream that left me with no sense of time or place, but with random images and some confusion. The characters were very richly developed but the story went off foraging at times. I’m glad I read it, but am not sure if I’d recommend it. A movie version might make the whole thing much more understandable. On the other hand, Hollywood could completely mess it up!

Thanks Jengif for sending it across the miles ;-)

It just arrived in the mail and I'm just coming to the end of my current read - great timing! I'm looking forward to this as I've read some cyberpunk fiction before (Neal Stephenson) and thoroughly enjoyed it and had always meant to get hold of "the book that started it all".

7 out of 10

I found this an interesting read but quite difficult to get through. Interesting because of Gibson's visions of the high tech future (written in 1984, so some details that must have seemed outlandish then are now almost ordinary, like the megabyte transfer rates). Difficult because the descriptive narrative is so detailed and most of it so alien to what we know, that you really have to stay tuned in to keep up with the story, particularly as it swings from reality to dreamlike states quite frequently. I've ended up feeling as though I've missed a lot of the meaning of the story, although I think I know most of what was going on. I also didn't particularly warm to any of the characters, which didn't help much.

Definitely a challenging and stimulating read, but it didn't leave me with a great feeling of satisfaction on finishing it. I'd still recommend it though, and I think I'd like to re-read one day to try to answer the questions I'm left with at the end...

Off to krin511 now - enjoy!

Thanks for sharing it jmg49!

I finished this book tonite. It was a tough read - not really difficult to get into, but I really had to pay attention to it, and several times had to go back to figure out what was going on. Still, it was worth the effort; I really enjoyed it. The characters were very rich, and the descriptions were *almost* good enough for me to actually picture things. At the end, though, I was left feeling hanging - like I went through all of that, and it never really wrapped itself up. I want to know what happens!

Thanks jmg49 for sharing this book, and giving me a chance to read my first "cyberpunk" nove. I'll be sending it on to ciaracat as soon as I get an address.
