8 out of 10

I picked up this book several years ago at a Friend of The Library Booksale and it sat in my TBR forever until last week. I wish I had rad it earlier.

A bittersweet tale of a woman facing loss and life's challenges, she holds onto the past by baking bread. I'm not going to go into too much detail for fear of spoiling the plot for the next reader. Suffice to say I could relate to this book on more than one level. Very enjoyable!

Nice book - some sadness, some happiness, love and life. It makes a good story! And this book really did make me want some homebaked bread...

There are quite a lot of books where cooking or baking is an essential part of the book along with relationships. I have read quite a lot of books like this, and also liked many of them. This book, however, wasn't among the best ones. That's sad, because there was nothing wrong with the plot itself, although it seemed to take ages before it really got going. What bothered me most, was that the text just didn't flow. There were too many difficult words, too many viewpoints and side tracks. It was only when they began to tell about what happened in France that I managed to really enjoy the story. The France parts were the best parts of the whole book, if you ask me, whereas the most boring parts were the Jemima Jones texts. I also like to read about cooking and baking, although I'm still waiting that one of these kind of books tells about the delights of vegetarian (or all vegan!) food. (Do I have to write it myself?) I'm not a big fan of white bread, but I must admit that the sourbread sounded delicious. I just visited France two months ago and I liked the boulangeries and fresh bread there. There was also a French food market happening in my town Tampere just a couple of weeks ago and their market stands were the same colour than the cover of the book, yellow and white stripes. (Didn't notice that in France, though.) With these memories and all, I wish the book was better. Perhaps someone else will like it more.
