The Map That Changed the World : William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology

Another excellent book by Winchester! This time he makes a fascinating book about Willam Smith and the birth of modern geology. Sound dull? Not at all! In 1793, a common canal digger named William Smith made what, at first, seemed an ordinary enough discovery == there were layers in the earth. But soon, he realized he could trace these layers all across England, and, eventually all across the world! What makes this an amazing story is that he was reviled in his day, or, at best, ignored. He ended up spending many years in Debtor's Prison, the victim of plagiarism, then homeless for 10 years. Find out how he was eventually vindicated and came to be called the Father of Modern Geology.
I caught this book from my dad and I plan to release it at Moody Library at Baylor.
