The Good Women of China

Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down it's pages, its spirit grows and strengthens… L'ombra del vento // The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafòn |

This is a heartbreaking account of the lives of women in China and, as always, Xinran writes in a touching, engaging way. Recommended reading, absolutely!
Next off to Chania as per request.

I have been reading several books about China during the past few years and the more I read, the more I want to know. This one was very special - because of just like the front cover says : Hidden voices...
This is an eye-opener in a way, but sadly I can't say I'm really surprised. I loved this book, it is well written, not over-sentimental. Can't wait to read more books by Xinran.

I read the book in two sessions; had to keep a couple of weeks in between. The book was brilliantly written so that when the horrible descriptions of the womens' experiences really got to you, then the author turned the focus into something else. As a reader you had time to recover and be prepared for the next horrors.
As a book this is brilliant. I have had enough of the genre for a while, I've read a few books on Chinese women in the past couple of years. I need a break :)
This book may go to Gambia school library project, or as an offering at the Finnish forum. I haven't quite decided yet.
Thanks for sharing this book!

How heartbreaking stories. This is an interesting book, even though it always makes me sad and depressed to realize the wrongdoings and evil in the world.

Since it's short stories, I'm taking a chance with Xinran... As I told MiuM at the meet-up, Asian literature tends to have a little too melancholic undertones to be uplifting or refreshing reading. Instead it leaves you with a bitter undertaste that you just can't shake off. But, life has to have its harsh lessons as well.

What sad stories. I knew life in China could be hard, especially during the Cultural Revolution, but I'd no idea things had been so dreadful for some women. A very sobering read.
