7 out of 10

I bought this book as I'm going on a roadtrip to California soonish and I wanted to read some books to get me in the travelling mood. I adore Stephen Fry so this book seemed perfect to combine the two, but it was a bit of a disappointment. Sure, it's funny and Stephen Fry is at his dry humoured, irreverent best, but it didn't really feel like a travel story. I don't feel I got an insight into the US. The chapters on each state were really way too short and most of them were filled with Stephen Fry being a smartass. Which was very entertaining, but not really the point of reading the book. He ran into such interesting people and situations and everytime I just wanted to hear more about it, but then he'd move on to the next chapter and state. So all in all, it's definitely a funny book, which is to be expected, but it lacks a lot of content. A missed opportunity, really.
