7 out of 10

I had heard quite a few people recommending Emily Barr, so I thought it was time to try it out. This book's premise seemed interesting, a British girl going to NYC and starting over her life, but most of the story actually took place before she even went to NYC. It wasn't as much about her being in NYC as I had expected and the story was much more a sort of mystery/whodunnit type of thing than I thought it would be. Still, once I realized what kind of story it was going to be it was still quite enjoyable. I don't usually read these sort of books but this one was not bad. Emily Barr has obviously paid very good attention to mapping out your story, as she meticulously builds up the backstory, leaving you wondering for a long time what exactly is going on and what Evie's secret is. I didn't really care much for Evie though, I thought her quite annoying most of the time and I didn't particularly care for the other characters either. Most of them were written out quite superficial, making it hard for me to imagine them as real people, not just cardboard characters. Anyway, all in all it was an entertaining read. I will probably read another book by Emily Barr, just to see if this maybe was one of her bad ones. :D
