7 out of 10

I'm not sure what to think of this book... I enjoyed the story and some parts were genuinely funny, but the light dusting of magical realism seemed a bit wrong. I don't know, isn't magical realism - when applied - supposed to fit into the story as if it's real? That didn't seem to work out too well with this book. Either way, when I got past that (it seemed to peter out after being about half way) I liked the book better. I didn't care too much for the characters, which didn't help in my appreciation of the story, but it was entertaining enough. I thought the ending - with the parade and Dot's flight - was very well done. All in all, it was an okay read, too bad I couldn't really get into it. I'm sure that's just me though. :D
