This is a place of mystery...a sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.

Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Shadow of the Wind

In my first memory I am three years old, and I am trying to kill my sister. Sometimes, the recollection is so clear I can remember the itch of the pillowcase under my hand, the sharp point of her nose pressing into my palm.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thriteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfustions, and injections to help her sister, Kate, fight leukaemia. Anna was born for the purpose, her parents tell her, which is why they love her even more.

But now she can't help but wonder what her life would be like if it weren't tied to her sister's... and so she makes a decision that for most, at any age, would be too difficult to bear, and sues her parents for the right to her own body.

Journal Entry 8 by hakkalina at Budapest, Pest Hungary on Sunday, December 12, 2010
I was hooked from the very first pages. It was/is a quite disturbing story. Repressed emotions, pain, anger, swallowed things, nevertheless the love is there.

Doing something that we think 'right', we even believe in our right, nevertheless it may be wrong. One would like to do the best, still do wrong. Kate was ill, and her all family was ill, the fear to lose Kate, it made her parents mad, mainly her mother, and they used everything to save her. Anna was a good device for it, but what about was Anna's own life? Everything was about Kate's life, or rather to save Kate's life, meanwhile what about was Kate's own life? This family forgot to speak, forgot to communicate, forgot to express their feelings, they repressed their own fear, pain, they lived from crisis to crisis, they forgot to live, they forgot to be happy about that they were still together.

It's here. I've never actually really realised it, but I like Jodi Picoult's books a lot. This book arriving here caused a shopping spree. And so I've ended up with another 6 bought books, of which two are Jodi Picoult. Thanks hakkalina for the very enjoyable afternoon. (I need someone to blame for my money-spending behaviour when my husband comes home, right? ;) )

Journal Entry 11 by wingdutch-bookwing at Weesp, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Sunday, October 9, 2011
Nice to read, but as many others have mentioned the end was very unsatisfactory. The way I see it, is that Picoult didn't dare to take sides, afraid of reader's reactions and thus choose the easy way out. She had a problem, an ethical problem, one for which she would have gotten a lot of negative reactions for either side she would have chosen. And so she decided to do the easy thing, throw something entirely else in and so get rid of the problem. It's like she wrote one book, and then at the end started with another book. I wonder what the book after this one is about.
In the back at the interview she explains that this was a realistic scenario, medically. I do NOT agree with that. She also explains she did it to hammer into all the characters what's really important in life. Says who?
Also rereading the prologue. It turns out that that is from a whole different person then when I started the book. It doesn't fit in with the emotional feelings from this person in the book. It's too cold.
Well, enough said, before I spoil the book.

Reserved for JPix (if I got that right) for the wishlist-tag game.

Yes, I hated the ending, I would have preferred ignoring the last 20 pages or so, and be left with an open ending, than with what I actually got. My Sister's Keeper is a highly emotional book with multiple character voices shifting perspectives. You can't say it's enjoyable, since the subject is one so sensitive. But it's a real page turner, and when you're caught it can cost you a night's sleep :)

Ready to travel on to Esme-Weatherwax, as soon as I can get myself to the post office.
