Daisy Miller travels to Europe with her wealthy, commonplace mother and in her innocence and audacity offends convention and seems to compromise her reputation.

This is the first time I've read a work by Henry James. I liked the dialogue between the characters (especially between Daisy and Winterbourne), but wasn't impressed by the book as a whole. Daisy portrays a flirtatious (sometimes bratty) girl who doesn’t care about changing her behavior in foreign company. Is James making a generalization about all American girls at that time? I hope not. Daisy does say a few gems. Here’s my favorite:
“I have never allowed a gentleman to dictate to me, or to interfere with anything I do.” (p. 88)
“…and I, thank goodness, am not a young lady of this country. The young ladies of the country have a dreadfully pokey time of it, so far as I can learn; I don’t see why I should change my habits for them.” (p. 99)
P.S. The introduction and end notes are helpful, but gives away the ending. So read these after the story if you don't want spoilers.
