I so much enjoyed this book that it was my choice for the "Best of 2009" yankee-style bookswap on bookobsessed.com. Of all the books I read (or listened to) last year, this is the one I talk about the most. I found it really interesting and entertaining. In fact, I bought another copy from audible as our Christmas gift for one of the people in our family. I haven't given the book a 10. I had minor quibbles, like that the first section, on the kouros, seemed to go on too long. But I keep talking and thinking about the research into married couples and the devastating effects of contempt. I loved the section near the very end on blind auditions for orchestras. And the stuff about the war game do-over is just so depressing that I don't even want to comment on it. A super-interesting book! |

In the meantime, I was excited to see a new tv series based on the work of Paul Ekman, who is featured heavily in one of the chapters of "Blink" (I had also seen him interviewed in a linguistics documentary several years ago). If you enjoy that chapter of Blink, I'd recommend at least the first episode of "Lie to me" - and then you can decide for yourself whether to carry on or not. |
