Read this years ago but don't really remember it, so I'm rereading it now.
Someone apparently tried to ban this book because the description of slavery is too graphic. Isn't the idea that we want people to know it was a *bad thing* so it shouldn't happen any more? How is anyone supposed to get that concept across if the whole idea of slavery is sugar-coated? :(

Yep, it's pretty grim all right. But wouldn't you expect the journey of a slave ship to be that way? How could it be otherwise?
I would've liked a note at the end about the author's research..but Jessie hears that conditions are *worse* on other ships, and I'm inclined to believe that.
Not exactly a shining moment in human history, but one that should be remembered.
