I'm taking this paperback from the ABC Bookbox. I read the book in school, but that was a loooong time ago, and even then I suspect we only got an abridged version. Will be interesting to revisit it now, and to compare it with the 1992 film adaptation.
Later: OK, I knew that Cooper's style was, to say the least, windy, but this really was something of a slog - and I'm a reader who enjoys many long-winded writers (Dickens, Trollope, Thackeray, etc.). That said, I appreciated many of the scenes, which do convey a feeling of being in the "forest primeval"!
While I generally prefer my book-to-film adaptations to be faithful to the original, in this case the addition of the romantic subplots - and some of the most dramatic scenes, which differed from the book or were entirely new - did seem to be an improvement.
[The TV Tropes page deals with the book and the 1992 film. And there's even a page containing Mark Twain's diatribe against Cooper, which is very funny whether you like Cooper or not!]
