Great knockabout cops and robbers stuff. Nobody does it better than Brookmyre. Features my second favourite Brookmyre character Angelique de Xavia. A perfectly good stand alone novel but if you prefer to read a character's exploits in order this book comes after 'A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away' but before 'A Snowball In Hell'.

over to you as promised a couple of months ago outside a pub in Colchester

This guy has a really good snse of the ridiculous. I'd love to see one of his books as a film

1. Drat. This turns out to be another book I never got journalled this summer. I had a wonderful tour around Colchester from Karen, collected several books from various OBCZs and took lots of photos using Mr P's phone. Months later, I realized that it had been a grave mistake to think I should hold off journalling the books until I'd managed to get the photos from him. I thought I'd caught up now, though. Oops.

2. Even worse is to realize that this was the book Karen mailed me. Sorry again about the not journalling! Especially since I was coming on line to report that I was about to give up after page 46.

The blurb on the back sounds fantastic! And yes, I agree with Karen I'd probably enjoy a film based on this. But. Call me squeamish but the first chapter [sorry - Prologue] took a bit of stomaching. Ok, the guy is a misogynist hit man with a potty mouth. Got it. The next chapter started off as more promising, but now I've had it up to here with character exposition. I guess I should have just read the prequel and then I could have skimmed this - it's like a long lecture from the narrator with precious little action or even dialogue. Sorry guys - maybe this just caught me at the wrong moment, but right now I feel like Brookmyre's editor did him a grave disservice by not cutting those 46 pages down to about 15. Or 3.

Karen, I hate not enjoying a book that somebody else has taken the trouble to send to me, but the one consolation is that with bookcrossing there's almost always somebody else out there who IS going to enjoy it. I'll plan to take this along to our next local meeting.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Since the book had been waiting for readers on a local BC shelf for ages without moving a notch, I took it for a little trip and wild released it next to a statue of Axel Wilhelm Wahren as part of my summer releasing challenge (on Finnish forum)! Hopefully it finds a new reader soon!
