I took this with me when going to Lowestoft, Suffolk to read while staying with family.

I am a Star Trek fan, have watched all the series and films, and Kirk is my least favourite character. To be honest I think that it mostly due to the time period in which the series was written when it was ok for the captain of the ship to be a sexist egomaniac. Thank goodness times have changed. I have always been irritated by his lack of acting ability (very wooden, shouting a lot, and pausing in the most absurd places) but when I was younger I would hate to miss an episode of T. J. Hooker.

There is something appealing about Shatner. He knows that he is perceived as being melodramatic and egotistical. He's built an entire career around perpetuating that persona and is not bothered about mocking himself (which is true in this book). I was surprised to find out that he was an established actor who had won acting awards before Star Trek; some standards must be very low. This book really did make me think about what a precarious life actors lead. Always worried about what work they will get next, but scared of having something too regular which runs the risk of being type cast. It comes across as a very stressful way to live. I think someone has to be very brave (or stupid) to commit themselves to such a life.

I have always thought of Shatner as being quite a self-centred shallow person and this book did not do much to alter that image. Though, to be fair he does admit that through most of his life he showed a lack of consideration for the feelings of others; mostly due to just not noticing when they were upset or angry rather than malice, and has matured over the years.

Having access to the internet enhanced my enjoyment of this book. I confess that I did have a look at www.williamshatner.com which was shamelessly promoted throughout the book. I also could not resist finding a clip of his rendition of Rocket Man on U-tube. I was laughing out loud most of the way through, as I was during the family guy parody of that performance. I recommend the viewing of these to anyone else who reads this book.

Lots of Star Trek fans think that because it became so HUGE that the people making it must have known that they were working on something amazing. In fact for Shatner it was just one in a long list of jobs that did not work out and he did not give it a second thought until years after.

Found in Natural History Museum in Colchester. Very enjoyable - I quite like William Shatner, and found this book humorous, a good read, but sometimes sad when he touched on parts of his personal life (such as the tragic death of his wife in a drowning accident). Mostly, it is full of humour, and you feel that this is a man who was put on the planet to entertain.

I will send this book on its way for someone else to enjoy.
