Most of Le Guin's science fiction is set in a human galaxy where the distance of time and space imposed by relativity is mitigated by instantaneous transmission of information through a gadget called the ansible. The Dispossessed, famous for being Ken Livingstone's favourite science fiction novel, was the book in which she told us of Shevek, the ansible's inventor, and the ironies of his career. Shevek is a loyal citizen of a poor anarchist world, Anarres, which finds frills like research hard to afford; he travels to the neighbouring world of Urras, to find that unbridled capitalism is not much fun either.

I just read this book for a second time after an interval of several years and it's just as good as I remember it, I could easily read it a third time. Parts of it have stayed with me over the years.

I think I would like to live on the anarchist world of Anarres, although the story points out its bad points as well as the good. Maybe Hain is better, but I don't know much about that planet yet. I'm off to put some other books from the series on my wishlist so I can find out more...
