Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall

From the back:
"In Nocturnes, Kazuo Ishiguro explores the ideas of love, music and the passing of time. From the piazzas of Italy to the 'hush-hush floor' of an exclusive Hollywood hotel, the characters we encounter range from young dreamers to cafe musicians to faded stars, all of them at some moment of reckoning.
Gentle, intimate and witty, this quintet is marked by a haunting theme: the struggle to keep alive a sense of life's romance, even as one gets older, relationships founder and youthful hope recedes."

Why have I not read Ishiguro before? I loved these stories and the gentle, melancholy yet at times also humorous style in which they were written. A tiny little gem of a book! Now I can't wait to read his other works.
Received on the last day of 2010. Thanks Annimanni.

Five intruiging stories that are closely linked in theme. Some of the stories aslo have some reccuring characters passing through. There was also a sort of enigmatic quality to the stories but this meant they didn't always have a clear ending. This left some mystery to what may have happened next, but as the characters were introduced for such a short I didn't really have the same investment as a reader in their lives and eagerness to think through what the endings could mean for them.

Mostly lovely, with a sprinkling of farce. I was expecting these stories to be a lot more melancholy (why do I bother reading the quotes on the back?) so I was pleasantly surprised by the humour in them.
