I picked up this paperback from a local Barnes & Noble today. It's the movie-tie-in edition for last year's film version. The reviews I'd read of the film hadn't made me want to see it, but I thought I might be better able to cope with a relentlessly grim post-apocalyptic story in text than on the screen {wry grin}.

Later: I found the book more readable than I'd feared, largely due to McCarthy's rich, near-poetic language. Not that this makes the story any less harsh - if anything, it enhances some of the most horrible scenes - but it does make it more readable. But I have to say that this is one of the most relentlessly grim books I've ever read, and the ongoing bond of love and protectiveness between the father and son only made the rest of it that much more horrifying. While having the boy to look after seemed to give the father the strength and will to carry on, it also gave him ongoing dread, for the awful things the child might see or suffer...

Despite the nihilistic feel, I was involved in the story through the end, and while this isn't a book I'd recommend to just anyone I do think it will reward those who can bring themselves to tackle it.

I found this book at my weekly drinking night (Wednesday) on a table in the bar's lobby. I had heard good things about it and the movie. So i took it. It was bleaker than I thought. intriguing, but bleak. I am waiting for the sequel. This book is on it's way to Billericca, Mass.

This was a quick and engrossing read. I enjoyed it even though it was bleak; it was a page turner. The ending was quick. My friend gave it to me about a year ago and it went on my shelf (sorry!) I was finally able to read it and I am now setting it free!!!!
