'A stunning novel of the First World War.
'They've gone now, and I'm alone at last.
I have the whole night ahead of me,
And I won't waste a single moment of it...
I want tonight to be long, as long as my life...'
For young Private Thomas Peaceful, looking back over his childhood from the battlefields of the First World War, his memories are full of family life deep in the countryside, Mother, his brothers Charlie and Big Joe, and their friend Molly, come vividly alive in his mind. But every moment Tommo spends thinking about his life, means another moment closer to something cannot bear to thing about - a time when the war and its horrific consequences will change his life forever.
Michael Morpurgo has written a stunning novel which beautifully captures the innocence of youth, and the terrible effects of growing up and fighting in the First World War.
'I happened to interview three farm boy veterens, then well into their eighties, when I was researching my book 'War Horse'. They told me something of what they had lived through. There was no poetry in their stories, only horror regret and great sadness for the loss of good friends. So I came to write 'Private Peaceful'.
4 tapes, unabridged.
Approx: 4.5 hours listening.'
Bought for about £2 in Huntingdon Oxfam last year. Bought with the best of intentions, but as I already have the book and will re-read, I am giving this audiobook away.
I really like the book, it is extremely well written and deals with the subject of death and the First World War sensitively but not mawkishly.
A word of warning - the situation in the story is not what it may seem, but stay with it, it's all explained in the end.
Being RABCK'd to Hakkalina in Budapest, Hungary. Hopefully being posted off from Brampton Post Office today (Tuesday 5th January 2010) to catch the 5pm post. Enjoy!

Cassettes LOL
It brings my childhood memories back.
Love it, love it, love it :D
2012.04.28.
I like Morpurgo's stories, this novel is not an easy read in written form either, so it was much hard to listen to. The storyline was ok, I understood, at least I think it, though there were parts which were non-understandable for me... My listening skill still needs to develop... :))
Thank you for sharing this book with me!
Thanks for sharing, hakkalina. Not an author that I have read but the subject matter will no doubt hook me!
