From the back cover: "Chinatown, 1933. In a struggling, immigrant family, three young children strive to make sense of their lives. Raised in the customs of the old world, they must somehow find their place in the new.
Told she is a useless girl, only sister dreams of becoming Shirley Temple and escaping the rigid old ways.
Adopted second brother struggles to overcome prejudice and loss. For him, boyhood is a time of hidden emotions and bewildering new feelings.
But it is sickly younger brother who surprises them all. Witness to things he cannot understand, he teaches his family how to mourn and how to go on living."
This was a great book which I highly recommend.
This is going into my Two Worlds virtual bookbox.

Another fantastic-looking book from loveamystery. I'm really looking forward to reading a novel set in Vancouver.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I enjoyed this book very much. It was especially interesting to me because my mother grew up in Vancouver at about the same time as this book was set, so some things were familiar to me (the fear of TB, for example); I've also been to many of the places described in the book. But because this is a story about a Chinese family, the point of view is different from what I've heard before.
Thanks again, loveamystery!
This book will soon be on its way to Dancesports, who chose it from ApoloniaX's East Asian Virtual Bookbox.
