This one's for me. Long awaited from my wishlist...I finally bought it for myself.

Bestselling author Susan Vreeland returns with a vivid exploration of one of the most beloved Renoir paintings in the world

Instantly recognizable, Auguste Renoir’s masterpiece depicts a gathering of his real friends enjoying a summer Sunday on a cafe terrace along the Seine near Paris. A wealthy painter, an art collector, an Italian journalist, a war hero, a celebrated actress, and Renoir’s future wife, among others, share this moment of la vie moderne, a time when social constraints were loosening and Paris was healing after the Franco-Prussian War. Parisians were bursting with a desire for pleasure and a yearning to create something extraordinary out of life. Renoir shared these urges and took on this most challenging project at a time of personal crises in art and love, all the while facing issues of loyalty and the diverging styles that were tearing apart the Impressionist group. Narrated by Renoir and seven of the models and using settings in Paris and on the Seine, Vreeland illuminates the gusto, hedonism, and art of the era. With a gorgeous palette of vibrant, captivating characters, she paints their lives, loves, losses, and triumphs in a brilliant portrait of her own.

Here's a little blurb that I attach to each book that I've registered:

Welcome to BookCrossing! It's a site for catching and releasing books and spreading the good karma of reading! Please make a journal entry when you FIND this book and let previous readers know how you came upon it. You may remain anonymous on this site if you like but it's very safe and spam free. We leave FREE books around for others to stumble upon...they read, and then re-release in a public place for someone else to enjoy. Of course you're welcome to keep the book if you prefer but it's more fun to watch them travel and to hear from them once in a while. I hope you enjoy the book but I especially hope you enjoy BookCrossing.

Many thanks, Poobah1
Make the *WORLD* your library!

Finally got to this one for the month of April's book club pick. Only 3 of 8 of us even read it (very rare)...it was so boring! This was the concensus for the most part. I did not even finish it, myself. Vreeland tried waaaaay too hard to create a visual experience, too many characters that I did not care about and way, way too many words! She definitely could've trimmed at least 1/2 of the volume out and then it may have been readable. I will be releasing this one soon. Or perhaps I'll look to see if it's on anyone's wish list. Beautiful painting-terrible book!

I'm setting this one aside for another BookCrosser who has it on their wishlist. I hope they enjoy it more than I have. Different strokes for different folks.

Edited July, 2010: Since the launching of the updated website I've been unable to figure any wishlist stuff out. What a mess around here. I'll keep it and send it along to someone once all this washes out. Sheesh! Who launches an upgrade that doesn't work properly for months?!?!?! What a disappointment.

PS. Re: the journal entry above this one, I've stepped back quite a bit from BookCrossing as the transition to the upgraded website has been rather sticky for way too long. I will continue to BC but less fervently in hopes that while I'm away more things will iron themselves out. I wish the site well and do hope that new members can navigate successfully and enjoy the site. Be well.
