Hideous Kinky
10 journalers for this copy...
Happy Christmas! Bought for me by my sister who followed my christmas rules and only bought me second hand books from the 1001 books list. will read and release soon. I am looking forward to this one as i really enjoyed the film and have wanted to read this for ages.
I am kind of disappointed in this book but I think that is because I'd been excited about reading it for a while. I did enjoy it but i was expecting something more, it just wasn't as sparky as i thought it would be. The story is still great and the film (which i've already seen) follows quite closely to the book. I never thought i would say this but i think i actually prefered the film to the book. The story of two small girls taken to Morocco by their mother in the 1960's. They play in the streets and get to know their new neighbours while their mother gets stoned and seeks spiritual enlightenment via a large number of boyfriends, quite a lot of kif and a visit to the sufi mystics.
Another 1001 book to read before you die ticked off the list.
Now available to a good home upon request but only as a loan for the time being. If you ask to borrow this book i will ask that you return it. Thanks.
This book is about to set off on its travels as a bookring! I know it is difficult sometimes as life gets in the way but please try to keep this book moving as best you can. If you have any problems or want out of the ring please let the person before you know so that they can skip over you to the next person on the list.

Arrived in today's mail, as well as two other rings - one of which is 950+ pages! That's seven bookrings I have in the house. I hate this kind of pressure.

Heading off in tomorrow's mail to fushmush.
It has arrived and is next on the TBR pile.
Young hippy mother moves to morocco with her two young daughters. While she tries to find herself, the two girls yearn for a normal English life of school and mashed potatoes.
It’s not really a traditional novel as such. Rather than having a beginning, middle and end, the novel is just a random collection of events. After reading this I read the Wikipedia entry on the novel. I learnt that the novel is actually an autobiographical novel of Esther Freud’s own childhood. So the lack of a traditional plot structure makes more sense.
An interesting look into a life that probably no longer exists. I can’t imagine there are as many hippies hitchhiking their way through Morocco these days.
Have PMed the next in line.
Update (14/04/10): no repsonse. trying again.

Sent to the next bookcrosser on the ray.
Book has arrived safe and sound. Sorry for the delay in replying to your PMs, I was away from the internet for a few days and did not help that we got stuck for two days due to a cancelled flight!! I have few rays to get through first, but will get to this as soon as I can.
12 May 2010 - An unusual story. I like the freedom of the book and the things n the market that the girls saw and the people they met (maybe I'm a hippy at heart!) and at times they seemed very happy. On the other hand there were times when I felt sorry for them when they were not happy and yearned for a normal like with normal food. It is funny how during life you pick up on words or phrases that stick with you and your family for the rest of your life, and this is where the title of the book comes from.
I have Caroleys address so will get it in the post tomorrow for you as I have hula hopping at lunch today and wont be able to get to the post office. Yes, you read it right, hula hooping, I know I'm mad but it is a good giggle!!!!

Received today thanks.
I've got a couple to read in front of this but should get to it quite quickly.
This was a nice quick easy read and I really enjoyed it. I liked that it was quite random in places rather than being a traditional storyline.
Thanks for sharing Shovelmonkey1. I've just PMd Shelj7k for an address and will get the book posted on asap.

I thought this was a wonderful book. I could really feel the dust and the heat of Marrakech, I could imagine the colour and the smells of spices and the noise of the market. The story was wonderfully told through the eyes of a five year old travelling to Morocco with her big sister and Mum in the 1960's. She and her sister Bea had a typical relationship, their Mum was loving but not focused on her daughters' needs. The two girls had complete freedom but craved what they knew as normality, school, mashed potato and, particularly in the little one's case, a father figure. Characters randomly came and went through the story with the exception of Bilal who brought love and security to the family. It was at times funny and at times heartbreaking but always charming. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read it.
I have requested alienagr's address but have not yet received a response. The book is ready to travel as soon as this comes through.

I really really enjoyed this book! It was an easy read and I liked a lot the fact that the story is told through the eyes of the little girl. I found very interesting the behavior of the mother and how it was interpreted by the two girls. Also, it was very touching the need for a father, like how much they wanted Bilal to be with them.
I think this book was very sweet and I am glad I had the chance to read it!
Now it is on its way to Icila!

It is nice for me to get out of the country I am so used to here in the US. I loved hearing about the travels of this small family. It was so charming reading a book told from the voice of a little girl.
Tomorrow this book heads to the post office to be mailed to safrolistics in Wales.
I enjoyed this book - thank you.
