Purchased from the "Friends of the Library" book sale to help the library since the legislature cut library (and other) funding with the last budget. I hope to read it sometime in the future and then send it on to others to read.
Thirty plus years of turmoil in Afghanistan (the Russians, Mujahideen, the Taliban, and the rebuilding of a country) are viewed through the eyes of two women, Mariam and Laila. Born a generation apart, they still share an abusive husband Rasheed, but become best of friends through their shared pain and experience. It is their story of loss and redemption
It is also the story of a childhood friendship that turns to love, only to be thwarted by fate.
Like The Kite Runner, the story is heartbreaking and poignant, but this reader enjoyed it more. It starts slowly, but builds quickly once the character of Laila is introduced.
