I picked up this copy from The Book Thing of Baltimore, Inc. located in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. The Book Thing is a warehouse of free books that has become a local fixture in the community. The premise is simple. You take as many books as you like, and you can donate as many books as you like. It has become a place for us bookcrossers to congregate often.

Here are my thoughts on the book:

Reading Rick Moody's Purple America is like spying on a dysfunctional family's bathroom, you see everything. Read this novel at your own risk, for you will experience decay and destruction with little catharsis. The writing is as well done as you could ask. The characters are well rounded and believable. My only issue with this novel is that I came to the table ill prepared to handle the depressing narration. So, read it but realize what you are in for.

Here is the book description from the publisher:

Having fled his less than perfect home life years ago, Hal Raitcliffe returns to help his ailing mother after his stepfather walks out on her, but over the course of one weekend, Hal's good intentions wear thin as the family airs its grievances.

Journal Entry 5 by PrettyPoodle at West Norriton, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, July 12, 2010
Not only is this a "Bookthing" (the bestest place for Bookcrossers, ever!) but Nate brought this book up himself, which was a nice treat! Our meetings are about 3 - 3.5 hours from where he lives so we rarely see each other.

I picked this book up at today's meeting of ABXC. If you had been there perhaps you could have gotten this book before I did. Oh well, you lost out. Sorry! Maybe next time!
