RING CLOSED, MY COPY IS OLD & I DON'T THINK IT'LL HOLD UP FOR ANY MORE READERS ~ THANKS FOR JOINING EVERYONE!

This is one of my favorite "weirder than weird" books ~ it's bizarre but also very moving. I've just finished rereading it and it was just as horrifying, shocking and touching as it was when I first read it 13 years ago. Jealousy, obsession, twisted love, childhood nightmares & frightening going-ons beyond all comprehension. It's all here and won't soon be forgotten. I'm ready to pass it along to interested Perpetually Bizarre Bookring members and to the general bc community.

A little about the book from Amazon.com:
A wild, often horrifying, novel about freaks, geeks and other aberrancies of the human condition who travel together (a whole family of them) as a circus. It's a solipsistic funhouse world that makes "normal" people seem bland and pitiful. Arturo the Aqua-Boy, who has flippers and an enormous need to be loved. A museum of sacred monsters that didn't make it. An endearing "little beetle" of a heroine. Sort of like Tod Browning's Freaks crossed with David Lynch and John Irving and perhaps George Eliot -- the latter for the power of the emotions evoked.

This book was really wonderful. I could feel, taste, and smell the atmosphere. I could picture the characters so vividly in my mind. The author truly brought this world to life. Thank you so much, LaurieS, for sharing this with me!

Wonderfully creepy and bizarre! I couldnt put this story down! These characters! The Bag Man has to be the most revolting literary character I've encountered in some time! I want to write so much more, but I don't want to spoile this spendidly twisted novel for any future readers!
Thanks for givimg me the oppurtunity to read this book. I'm definately going out and buying my own copy.

At first I was drawn into this book and didn't want to put it down, then I got bored with it and thought I wouldn't finish it. I kept reading, sometimes in enjoyment and other times skimming in boredom. I did finish and although this is definitely not one of the best books I have ever read, it is very interesting to say the least. This is going out in the mail today to "First-Noel".

I just finished this book and would have to agree with most that it is "weirder than weird". I found the book and it's story bizarre to say the least. The idea of Al "engineering" his family of "freaks" is at the very least grotesque. Arty's eventual following and the subsequent Miss Lick is disturbing. In the beginning I enjoyed reading this book, but by the end it was just too much for me. Thanks though for organizing this bookring. This is definitely a book I would never have read were it not for BX.

I'm not sure what I think of this book. I'm definitely glad to have had a chance to read it, as it's something I wouldn't have picked up if not for bookcrossing.

I don't know if I really liked any of the characters, though I did feel sorry for them (even though I got the sense that this wasn't the author's intent). The book took these "freaks" and used them to amplify all the worst in people, it seems - intense jealousy, intense need for control, intense anger and hurt, almost to the level of charicature. It was difficult to see the good in the characters, as they all seemed overshadowed by their faults.

I got sucked into it, couldn't put it down, but it left me feeling a bit wrung out when I was finished with it. It was an emotionally exhausting read.

I'll send this on to mlbish as soon as I get an address. Thanks for sharing this LaurieS!

Well, I gave this one the old college try. I did read a significant portion of it (122 pages, I think), but I just found myself feeling very tired whenever I thought about how much I had left. That's how I knew it was time to give it up.

I don't think I have ever ever ever picked up a book like this one. It is totally bizarre. Once I got over being appalled that someone would take drugs during her pregnancy in the hopes of getting deformed children (let alone try and abandon their 'normal' child), their lives were actually a bit interesting to me. Unfortunately, though, I just couldn't connect with the characters enough to continue.

I think Sherria is right when she described the book as an emotionally exhausting read. And right now, I am totally wrung out in my real life, trying to finish my PhD, so I just can't devote the emotional energy to a book like this. I thank you, LaurieS, for introducing me to this book. Perhaps I will come back to it some day. Hmmm...I may have to now that I have seen mention of the Bag Man (I did not get to his part!)

Happy travels, weird little book!

I have Salinger007's address, so I will let this serve as my release note and mail it right away.

What can I say? Weird, weird, weird weird!! Although I found some of the characterizations a bit too pat at times, it was so fascinating to find out what they would do next. Arturo and what he was willing to do to his family scared me on many levels.

The end felt a bit rushed, though. Thanks for letting me read this book!

Reserved for the next reader. :)
