This book was very touching, it definitely reached out to me. I cried a couple times at her life's struggles. I can't imagine anyone treating children that way!

Journal Entry 3 by HunterRyu at Elk Township, New Jersey USA on Saturday, June 12, 2010
When her mother died in a fire, eight-year-old Jerri thought life couldn't get worse. She was wrong. Sent to live with people who didn't want her, Jerri was powerless to stop her once-happy childhood from becoming a nightmare of cruelty and neglect. Only a stubborn belief in her own worth and a fierce will to live allowed her to reach adulthood physically and emotionally intact. This is a book that will inspire not only those who have been orphans or foster children, but anyone who has known the pain of being unwanted.

I thought an update might be appreciated.

I have read to where she talks about her Dad coming and building a shower for her and her brothers. I am having a hard time not hating the Grandparents and the father

Journal Entry 8 by NMReader at Herndon, Virginia USA on Saturday, September 4, 2010
I finished the book as partof the August readathon.

I think the book was enlightening abouot the foster care system in effect when Jerri was in it.

I can't imagine her adoptive dad, his family or even her mother's family and how they treated these kids.

I found the book hard to put down. What a strong person Jerri was to overcome the odds and go on to get an education and make something of her life. It could have so easily gone the other way. I have heard that the foster care system needs a complete overhaul and if Jerri's experience is typical, it does!!! I so hated her Grandma Resuba for the abuse, both physical and verbal that she inflicted on Jerri and her siblings. I also despised her adoptive father for not standing up to his mother and protecting his children. Unfortunately, so many of the people who could see that there was something going on chose not to get involved.

I have the next participant's address and I will get this book moving in the next few days.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This was truly a sad and inspirational story. I, like HunterRyu, cried several times because I cannot imagine treating a child in such a manner. I child is a gift and holds an immense amount of love, trust and spirit; it was sad to see some of it crushed, yet wonderful to see it reappear so quickly throughout.

I want to thank the author for sharing her story with the world. She is truly an inspiration to all that no matter what life throws your way, you can overcome it and shine as brightly as a star! It made her a wonderful teacher who knew what to say to those who came in contact with her (not spoiling).

It really should be mandatory reading for all those involved in raising a child: parents, teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, etc.

Continuing its journey as a Bookray to KayJay33.

This little book arrived today. On reading the reviews of previous readers, I think that I will both love and hate this story.

Journal Entry 20 by wingkayjay33wing at Langley, British Columbia Canada on Friday, November 12, 2010
This is a very sad true story about children in the United States foster care system. When her mother died Jerri and her brothers and sister were taken to live with their adoptive father's mother.I could not believe that this woman could be so cruel, or that her son allowed her to treat them as she did.He was apparently a loving father when he was married to their mother. What changed?
It is very hard to believe that just about everyone that Jerri met treated her with cruelness , the foster parents , the teachers at school, the social workers, even her fathers new wife, and the person in charge of the orphanage. I almost feel that she is prone to exaggerate to try to make a more interesting story. For instance when in college she states that "every day I encounter a thousand different kinds of people. That sounds a bit excessive to me.
I have the address for the next reader so will get the book in the mail soon. Just waiting for a day where it isn't raining.

A good read. I wish it wasn't true. All those adults that treated Jerri less than a Child should be treated is abhorrent. Very frustrating.

This book will be on its way to the Green Isle next week after Christmas. Thank you for sharing!

(Spoilers are in review)
I found this story both disturbing and in an odd way comforting. I was greatly disturbed on how the kids were treat. I found the Coal Cellar chapter the hardest to read. I do not understand how their adoptive father could treat them like that and allow his mom to treat them in such an abusive manner. Although towards the end she finds out why her mom's side of the family did not take them, but it no excuse. She is a lot more forgiving then I would have been. I also don't understand why her 2nd foster mom took her in if she did not want a teenage girl to begin with. It would have been better if Jerri was left at the orphanage than taken by that woman. The way the guidance counselor treated her made me shake my head. I was glad to see that some of the nuns were kind to her and tried to help her out.
However in spite of all this she went on to earn her masters and she ended up so much better then most people would have been in her situation. Her brothers also turn out ok. What really shines through is the fact that she could have been so bitter over what happened but she is not.
I am surprised she remembers what she thought when she was 8,9,10......., I think she does a good job telling her story and I was please to see she was able to help other kids who had lost a parent.

A very interesting book, I think Jerri writes it really well. It was difficult to read some of it, just can´t understand how people can be this mean towards children, made me so angry!
I do agree with a reader above me though, that it´s hard to believe that almost every single person she met was so mean to her.
