Best friends Miaka and Yui find a book in the library that can transport them to the Universe of the Four Gods, a parallel world to ancient China. To escape schoolwork and family problems, Miaka flees to this parallel world, only to find a lot more danger and romance than she bargained for.
I enjoy Yu Watase's books, and this one is great fun. Hope to get the rest of the series soon!
I originally planned to put it in a manga bookbox but it was too big to fit in. Oh well, for the next round I hope.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Putting into AlterEgoZoe's manga box.
This book enjoyed a brief stop in San Jose, California before continuing its travels in AlterEgoZoe's Manga bookbox!

Fushigi Yugi was one of my favorite anime series in high school. While I find that I can no longer stand the melodrama of the tv show, I still love the manga.

Fushigi Yugi was one of my favorite anime series in high school. While I find that I can no longer stand the melodrama of the tv show, I still love the manga.
I'm taking this from AlterEgoZoe's Manga/Manhwa bookbox.
The story opens in very slapstick fashion, with a pair of schoolgirls falling into a magical book and winding up in a fantasy land - where they're immediately set upon by bandits, only to be rescued by a handsome young fellow who (in best Han Solo style) claims to only be in it for the money. Before this goes any farther the girls are whisked back to their own world, and head home - but Miaka gets into a fight with her mother and eventually returns to the book and that strange new world, where she learns that she's a Very Special Priestess who must gather seven warriors as her protectors. Her rather noisy and uncouth response to all this is pretty funny, though oddly enough several of the handsome male characters seem drawn to her - must be that "priestess" thing, right? {wry grin} [I also enjoyed some of the fourth-wall comments in the margins; at one point where Miaka's escaped yet another hazard, another character comments on her luck, and the mangaka notes "Of course she's lucky, she's the heroine!"]
Things get a bit less funny back in her own world, where her brother (rapidly becoming my favorite character) and her friend Yui (the one who went through the book with her in the first place, and who now seems to have some form of connection with her) are desperately trying to find out where she went...
[I enjoyed the anime adaptation. And there's an extensive TV Tropes page for the series; I found it helpful and entertaining.]

I'm adding this book to Aberpeter's Read and Journaled bookbox, which will be on its way to its next stop shortly. Hope someone enjoys it!
This book stopped here for a short visit in Woodstock, Georgia. It is still travelling in Aberpeter's Read and Journalled Bookbox.
Came home in my Read and Journaled bookbox. I suspect my son will want to read this book as he really enjoys Manga.
