Bought at a library sale for my hubby but he wasn't interested in reading it as this is a memoir and he prefers a more fictional tale. Making it available.

Review by my partner:
Very entertaining book told through the eyes of a war time pilot. I found it interesting as I'm a pilot as well. Very personal account of training, life in the armed services, growing up, being thrust into a war like scenario.
A good story about mateship, wasn't bored with the book, and I don't read much.

Worth a look.

I didn't think the postie would be riding around yesterday, considering the weather conditions, but he was. And luckily I was home and on the balcony when he went past, so I was able to bolt down the stairs and out to the footpath straight away, otherwise this book would be be considerably damper than it is. It seems to be drying out okay though.

Thank you Billbooks and J4shaw for thinking of me. I do enjoy a good biography (or autobiography) in this case and aviation stories, so it is much appreciated.

I do have a bit on my plate at the moment though, so I will lend it to my father (a non-BCer) to read it first.

Went and visited my parents yesterday and gave this book to my father to read. He'll give it back to me when he's finished reading it so I can read it myself.

I see I neglected to post a JE when my father gave this book back to me. He said he enjoyed it but it was a bit boring in places as there wasn't much of the war in it.

I've now read it and rate it much higher. It is, on the face of it, literally, the "Reflections of a World War II Aviator", the story of a U.S. Marine dive bomber pilot. But what it is really about is what it is to be young and in search of adventure, trained to fly and kill, but too late in the war to really be involved in any of the major fighting.

That is not to say that there still isn't the horror of war, but it's the loss of friends in training accidents, in unnecessary missions attacking enemy held positions that have been frog-jumped and are now behind American lines and unable to effectively fight any longer, and as happens all too often, they just fly off and never come back.

What makes the book so interesting is the author's ability to describe the days of waiting, the nights of drinking, the practical jokes, the "good 'ol boy" chasing of women (mainly by his fellow trainees and then squadron members), without it becoming a poor man's "Animal House Goes To War".

The sections where he describes his love of flying are extremely well done, as are the passages that reinforce the age-old military joke that war is simply a case of hurry up and wait.

As he was married at 17 to someone he barely knew, I would have liked to know more about how his marriage went when he returned home after the war, but that probably would take another book entirely.
