Chosen out of a box of books from Stichting Overal, Nijmegen, during a so-called Box Day at Moem's.
I haven't read this book, and as it's such a classic, written by a Nobel Prize-winning author, I will read it before sending it on its travels.

Back Cover:
A timeless novel of every man's desire for land of his own. It is the story of lonely, rootless men who till soil that belongs to others, who never reap from the seeds they plant.

This is one of those books which has always been on the periphery of my consciousness, but I had never read. I remember watching a film where the main character was sitting on a train reading 'Of Mice and Men', and it's always been something I meant to read one day, so I was pleased to find it in the box. Despite being a thin book (118 pages) and being such a classic, it took me a year to get round to reading it, but I am certainly glad I didn't just pass it on unread, thinking that I would stumble upon it again sometime in the future. It only took me an afternoon to read, but I can understand exactly why it has been placed on the list of '1001 Books To Read Before You Die'. The descriptions are perfect, making it very easy to visualise the settings, at least to someone like me who was brought up watching Westerns and 'The Virginian'. I could imagine the bunk room, with George dealing out his hands of solitaire. The sense of foreboding builds, yet the dreams of the characters George, Lennie and Candy let us hope that there will be a happy ending. There are various changes of scene, and the scene in which Lennie, Candy and Curley's wife meet in Crook's room in the stables to reveal their loneliness, is one of the most memorable. Gradually everything conspires to draws the tale to the inevitable conclusion. Short, but perfectly formed.

I read 'The Grapes of Wrath' a few years ago and LOVED it, and actually recently 'forced' Skyring to download the audio book for our Route 66 road trip, so I'm really looking forward to reading this!
